My dream… a coffee farm on the Big Island. I just recently saw such a farm with a legal B&B for sale. Whaaaaaa! I will keep on dreaming.
Yes indeed! This is a very complicated dream though. These sheep are extremely rare and endangered. Although they have recently been domesticated (1800s) they are commonly slaughtered for meat. Saying this, I refuse to do this. They will be raised for their amazing quality wool and maybe cheese. Otherwise, they will grow fat on the farm and live out their lives. (I am considering selling lambs to other sheep-loving people.
These are complicated sheep as they are priced based on purity. The higher the purity, the higher the cost. You can get a 50% Valais and a 50% Merino (the basic wool and meat sheep) for very cheap (500 USD) while a 75%-100% Valais can cost upwards of 10K.
Additionally, they need shearing twice-thrice times a year. They also need a very detailed menu with perfect balances between oats, grass, hay, millet etc.
I moved to the Big Island a few years ago. Best thing I ever did. Everyone is so chill here.
HI is one of the very few places that tempted us to move there after we visited for the same reason. We opted not to for two reasons, the HCOL and it’s so far away from everywhere else which would impact both our traveling (via budget) and being so far away from our relatives.
Now that our kids are grown we’re hoping to find something relatively similar in the Caribbean for at least our winter abode. Time will tell.
I had some life circumstances that had left me in a constant state of high stress. HI has been very healing to that stress. Because of the 2 factors you mention, I will be moving back to the mainland eventually.
We debated moving there for just a couple of years. Maybe contemplate the Caribbean too?
The view from my back deck on Bald Head Island off the coast of NC. Love it…only accessible by ferry and no cars on the island - golf carts only. It’s a wonderful escape especially during a pandemic
@Creekland @bouders
I have a slightly dumb question. So I have heard several people mention HI. What does it stand for? I have never heard the acronym before. Am I correct in guessing that the “I” stands for island?
Never mind. I am so dumb…
There are never any dumb questions!!
Including yours
@Cavitee my friend has a house on Bald Head. I think she is actually there right now preparing for summer season. Such a beautiful and interesting landscape (I visited a couple of summers ago).
No worries at all! On the internet (and bumper stickers) a lot of acronyms are used, so I fully understand how it can be a default for one’s mind!
If you want a wee bit of info, HI is the state of Hawaii, but within the state it can specifically mean “The Big Island” (where Hilo is located). The other islands are known by their names with the next three largest being Oahu (where Honolulu, the capital and most of the population are), Maui, and Kauai (the northernmost island and IMO, the prettiest, called “The Garden Island”). There are smaller islands too - a couple more main ones and several smaller ones.
If you ever get a chance to go there, do it. It’s gorgeous and mostly laid back (some exceptions on Oahu).
Yeah! Thanks for the info. My parents got married somewhere in Hawaii. They said it is very pretty, and from the pictures, I can not disagree.
I have actually been thinking about the question and I think Bora Bora would be pretty cool as well…
Somewhere in Micronesia:
This looks beautiful. I think it’s not practical to own something in the south when we live in Ca but this area looks great.
We are just back from the big island Hawaii and we saw one property. It was on an whim but it’s opened our mind to something in Hawaii. The prices are crazy for things that can be short term rentals. For 1.2 we would likely not get an ocean view.
It’s a good problem to have but it isn’t as easy as I thought it would be.
Yes, Hawaii real estate prices are very, very high. With a view of the ocean, they’re even higher. An option would be to own a unit in a condo that has a view of the ocean, but that may not be what you were envisioning.
Sometimes I long to move to the FL Keys. Not all the way to Key West , even tho. Would love the night life, but not so far from friends and MDs. I’d like to be by the water, have fresh fish, and a relaxed culture
