Vacuum

What kind of vacuum is best for a small, carpeted dorm room? (No desk check-out) I'd like to keep it cheap.

Thinking about:

Old-fashioned, no power sweeper-- pretty easy to put out of the way, but would it clean well enough and easily enough. (I suspect the standard for cleaning will not be particularly high).

Stick vacuum-- fairly small and lightweight. But do they do a decent job on carpet (to make them worth more than the sweeper)? Are they tippy? Many, if not most are cordless-- is the charging stand in nuisance when space is so limited?

Folding vacuum-- Until two days ago I did know they existed. I think one would fit under DD's relatively high bed. Same questions about quality and ease of cleaning. Apparently they are somewhat heavy or a little difficult to maneuver. Has anyone out there had any experience with these?

Canister-- I like that the canister portion would fit under the bed, but I think the hose and wand portion could be a bit unwieldy to store. Also, most of the cheap ones don't have rotating brushes for carpet-- do they nevertheless do a decent job?

Either the stick or the no power. The average college students is probably not going to be vacuuming enough (if ever) to need a full power Turbo Whirlwind 900 Extreme Max.

I have a small stick one that I use for my entire apartment - I’ve had the vacuum for just over a year, it works great.

Also, a smaller one will help save on space.

Take a look at some of these. Target has them listed under their ‘Back to College’ section:

The Eureka “The Boss” Bagless Stick Vac - 166DX looks really nice I’d love to have one (and it’s not pricey too). College dorms usu. have residence life offices where you can check out vacuum cleaners. I love to keep my room clean so I think it wouldn’t hurt having one for myself.
