Val/Sal Talk

At my school, it’s not an issue. Meet the prerequisites and you’re automatically a valedictorian or salutatorian. Here are the pre-requisites:

Val: 4.2 overall GPA and completion of 26 semesters of AP/honors work
Sal: 4.1 overall GPA and completion of 22 semester of AP/honors work

Obviously, the GPA is weighted, so it’s really not too arduous to earn the ranking. Nearly 10% of my graduating class this year is a valedictorian or salutatorian.

I understand it’s hard to believe, but truly. I don’t care. Really what this thread means is me venting on **** that happens in my school. I don’t need to get involved in petty competition. I prefer learning than getting good grades.

“I try not to let schooling get in the way of my education”

 • Mark Twain (Paraphrased)

If you don’t care why would you force your child to be in the top 10? :/

that was my “academic high” moment. I was ultra-serious at that point. That’s actually an understatement. I was about as intense as the stereotypes of asian parents.

My kid will have a life. I truly don’t care as long as they keep decent grades.

I get that a lot of people on CC are really intelligent, but bragging about being “smarter” and testing better than the people who study isn’t really impressing.
Why are you showing off that you don’t put effort into your education?
But I dislike when people are all emotional about grades eg. girls in my class crying after getting what is equivalent to a C in a math exam or girls who did well telling EVERYONE including uninterested bystanders.

^ If people want to show off intellegence they toss around hefty IQ numbers. I am merely expressing disgust that even among the intellegent intellectuals are few and far between.

I do put effort into my education. Don’t mistake this statement as me showing off that I don’t put effort into it. I take my education very seriously, and put loads of work into it.

We all like learning who the vals are at the end of junior year, and when we “officially” learned who the vals were in senior year, there was a whole “search for the 6th valedictorian” (who actually didn’t exist). Besides that, a lot of people complained about the sal being, in their opinion, smarter than all the vals. But there are no conspiracies to jump rank and there isn’t a great deal of competition.

^ I wish my school was like that. For my school, it began freshman year for us. All the top 10-15 ask me if I’m the val or do I know the val and how they are… it’s annoying.

The vals(one korean, one indian), are both pretty chill. Everyone else is *****y and competitive as hell.

Well the korean is chill at least.

v I think val and sal have made HS a numbers game, and have caused numerous tense moments.

To be honest I’m glad my school is not ranked. But in graduation there is someone who is awarded dux which is the word for valedictorian in places such as England, Australia and New Zealand etc.

My school ranks, but it doesn’t seem like everyone is too caught up in it. I think I’m #3 or so right now out of a class of 400 and going into junior year, but I would be just fine gradating with that, especially because I couldn’t do much more than taking all the APs I could and getting a 4.0.

Nobody ever talks about it.

Like, truly never.

We only have a Vali and Salu. No rankings but that :P

This reminds me of when our #1, who used to be #2, was plotting to kill our #2, who used to be #1 (and who, in all honestly, ought to be #1, #%@$ the admin).

wow… I thought my school had it bad.

I think (hope) #1 was joking.

I’m #1 as of now (end of junior year), but I’m not going to lie and say that I’m really laid back or anything. I do get pretty competitive, but its mostly just healthy competition in my school.

That’s just proof that people take things like this too seriously. Personally, I feel someone with the best character should give the salutation and another the valediction. I don’t need to hear pretentious people who stressed over this thing finally just gloat about how this is a dream come true.

FWIW, my topic would be a comedic piece somewhat based on math and funny things in HS. None of the growth stuff, ew.

“Best character” ==> best liked by teachers. Yuck.

Lol I’m really well liked by my teachers, but I’m not fit to be a val or sal.
