Val/Sal Talk

Go make friends MIT, now, and not “friends”.

Seriously, my school never cared, like we all became aware of who’s val. around the beginning of senior year and no one was really caring to compete with her. The sal. is a good friend of mine, he just likes to keep his grades up for his own reasons. The 3rd guy is a beast though he’s just kinda lazy and I think if he bothered to lift a finger he’d be val. in a heartbeat along with going to MIT. I mean, the rest of the school outside of IB and AP care even less, they weren’t even aware of who was val. till she went up and gave a speech at graduation (literally, the guy next to me asked “hey, who’s our valedictorian?”). She’s kinda popular and people are aware that she’s smart but no one cares about these things.

lol I think I have maybe one to three good friends now. I need to stop sitting with the pretentious top 10. Like our val is a cool guy, I have a problem with the ties for sal and down the whole damn list to like number 30. All brown people and asians.

At my school, we’ve had the same valedictorian all four years. Usually, the person who will ultimately be valedictorian has emerged with a commanding lead by junior year (I think ours was up .12 or so). I would say the val/sal competition is really not that vicious, because there are typically a couple kids who rack up a pretty good margin (we graduated #1 at 4.84, #2 at 4.79, and #3 all the way back at 4.72). However, the competition for Top 10 can get a little heated, but only for certain people. The grade whores, so to speak.

Everyone in the top 5% at my school is usually a viable/competitive candidate for HYPS so it’s nice that we don’t rank. Who the eventual Val will be is pretty clear though.

Jersey, how many people are in your grade exactly?

Roughly 350 students.

mm… wow. That would be competitive. We have roughly 620 students in our class.

Our NMSF rate is around 7-8% so yes, the school is pretty competitive.

My school doesn’t rank our students. I know who the val is, though, and I’m pretty sure I’m sal (the val is the only person at my school whose avg is higher than mine). However, I never really tried to become val/sal, it just so happened to be that I had the right avg. Even if my average were a whole point lower, I’d still have a great average, and even though I wouldn’t be sal, I wouldn’t be complaining.

For anyone wondering, we have about 125 kids per grade.

I wonder how an 11 rank when I have a 4.1 and the #1 has a 4.3 looks to college.

They got rid of it in my school.

We have like 8 unofficial valedictorians

and a billion under them. If you aren’t in band or don’t take study hall, you are automatically out of valedictorian spot, because it is based on weighted. I think this is why they got rid of it.

I’m #1 out of 600 something students. It’s ridiculously how easy this school is compared to my previous school and how people here are more competitive than at my previous school which is #1 in the state and #3 in the nation and full of Asians. I barely even try at this school (i.e. I go home, sleep for 4 hours, eat, watch TV, surf CC, annoy my mom and brother and only 20 minutes of studying/hw) and I still manage 95%+. If I pulled this **** at my other school, I would most likely be in the B and perhaps C range hahahahh. I’m all laidback, apathetic, and indifferent while everyone else is bustin’ their asses trying and plotting stuff likewise to those people in your class you described. I know they will never pass me for #2 is 0.3 behind my 4.67 which means I can get 2 C’s next year (which will never happen though) and still be #1 even if #2 still gets all A’s. I think if I actually gave a shat, though, I would have 99%+ in every class.

Huhuhuhuhuhuhuhahahahahahaha.

^weirdest internet laugh ever

@porkperson, at my school band/orchestra count towards the GPA as regularly waited classes thus tanking a 4-year band/orchestra student’s GPA and eliminating any chance they might have had at being val. it’s sad but true

there is honors band, and thats what they take

yeah… I think I’m the only one in all weighted classes. But I love all the courses I chose. Especially AP USG and IB Comp Sci SL.

we don’t have honors band, unless you count AP music theory…
