How safe are expensive things in dorm rooms?? Like laptops, cell phones and ipods?? Is there some kind of drawer that can lock or something? And I realize the dorm rooms lock but that won’t stop a friend of your roommate invited over from helping themselves.

People have told me to buy a security box with a lock on it. I've seen a bunch at Target and Wal Mart. I'm planning to get one of those for my room.

Be very very careful. Just this last semester, I had 4 DVDs (each costs about $100 new) stolen from my room, despite the fact that I live in a single and my door is always locked.

In general, I haven't had a problem--this was the first and only time in four years that I had someone steal something from my room--but be conscious of the things that you have lying around that are easy for someone to take.

I was there last summer (and will be attending this fall) when someone on my floor had their iPod stolen. That is the only thing I know of while I was there, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened quite frequently...

first, by no means is crime prevalent at BU.. so don't take individual stories to heart when you're deciding whether BU is the right school for you.

but at BU, but like at any other university, there are risks in bringing valuables. many students are here on scholarships and wouldn't dare risk to lose it just by stealing something.. unless the valuable is worth more than $40,000. still, at a large university, there is bound to be some students who have crime written all over their foreheads.

you'll just need to be careful, especially if the valuable is something small like jewelry, an ipod, or cash. of course laptops get stolen too, but i think it's paranoid to lock your laptop every time you're not in the room. learn what type of person your roommate is and what type of friends he has, and exercise caution accordingly.

1) obviously.. always lock your door. some of my floormates willingly left their doors wide open whenever they went to the bathroom. others always locked it. if your roommate is the "open" type, and u want it always locked, talk to him early in the year.

2) tell your roommate to keep track of all guests and never leave guests alone in your room. tell him that guests should never touch your stuff.

3) hide your cash and small valuables. keep the amount of cash u have to a minimum.

mistakes happen and u or your roommate might accidentally leave the door unlocked when you're both out for the night. or u might lose your key. so be prepared for the times when things are more vulnerable to being stolen:

4) have your name written on things like ipods and laptops. write it in nail polish. know the serial numbers.

5) if u lost your key.. then between the time u first find out u lost it and the time u get your lock changed, tell your RA and some of your floormates to keep an eye out for your room and for anyone who you've never seen on your floor.
