CC is probably the only place anyone could ask this without sounding obnoxious - and i hope i don't sound obnoxious here - but I narrowly missed a 36 on the April ACT by making a stupid mistake (literally "misbubbling" (a word?)) on an answer in the reading passage. That mistake probably cost me the 36 composite, tho I did not "ace" the test, my scores broke out such that I think that would have pushed me up to 36 composite. I am very pleased with my SAT score and the only reason I would be taking ACT again is to log the 36 because I was so close.
Is there an inherent value to a 36, enough to warrant taking it again? I know there is nothing to lose, but i don't want to be obsessive and freak myself out.
What does CC think? I would not be studying again for it because I think luck is a factor at this level.

This would be obsessive.

There are much, much better things to do with your time. For example, you could cut your toenails, wash the car, walk the dog, clean out the refrigderator.

There really is no advantage to a 36 over a 35.

thanks for your response - i was kind of thinking that myself.

Nah, you’re fine. Probably 9 out of 10 times, you scored higher than the other person.

The only value is bragging rights.

Save your money and sleep in on the next test date.

yea sleep in and go suck a dookie

^^What the eff?

I made a 35, and I didn’t retake it. I thought about it, but I was scared that my score would drop.

Agree with VeryHappy. Your score is good enough and colleges will not look down at your score.

don’t retake it. but i’ll pose a question to the rest of you. i got a 34. should i retake it?

Don’t retake a 34 OR a 35. That’s just silly.

To answer your question, there is no inherent value to a 36. A 36 is just as much better than a 35 than a 35 is better than a 34. It’s not like you’re on a whole other level with a 36. The most likely thing that you’d do is match you’re current score or lower it, which could only be bad.

Same thing goes for a 34. You are over the middle 50% at basically every school, with the exception of MIT and a few ivies where you’re in the top 25% anyways.

in my book it says that 34,35,36 are all 99 percentile so there is no difference.

actually, 36 as a 99th percentile is better than 34 as a 99th percentile. Just because they’re all in the 99th percentile doesn’t mean that colleges doesn’t count on that 1 or 2 points.

i’ve got a similar question. i got a 35 also, but with a 9 on the essay… i know i can do better, but i don’t want to drop in composite.
advice?

(fyi, a 9 is the 88th percentile, a 10 is the 97th percentile.)

thisdude, the exact same thing happened to me. I got a 35 with a 9 on the essay. I am still deciding whether or not I want to take it again on standby, as I really think I could get the 36.

thisdude and mymo ~ I got a 34 with a writing 9 in April 2007. I decided to retake in April 2008 because we wrote a lot during our Junior year and I “knew” I could improve. On the retake I got a 35 and a…9. My advice, work on your application essays as this I believe will be more important to our applications than our ACT writing scores. OR go to a movie, get lost in a great novel, do a service project…do anything but waste another Saturday testing! Congratulations on the 35!

BlueHouse, that’s good advice, but I don’t feel I would be wasting my time. I’ve only taken the test once and I didn’t feel very well on the day of the test. Does anyone know the process for taking the ACT on standby?

My D was accepted SCEA to Harvard for the class of 2011 with a meager 35 on the ACT. So I guess it can’t be all that bad… LOL!

I got a 35 for a composite score, and a very very very sad SIX for the writing portion. (probably because I erased a paragraph, which must have made my essay practically illegible on the copy) Will colleges think that it was just luck that I got a 35 when they see my writing score?

Yeah, I got a 34 my freshman year - last year.
took it again this year without any prep at all and it went down to a 32…my advice is don’t take it unless you have some concrete plan to raise your score :]
