I am a junior in high school, and I have been taking spanish (not honors or AP just regular) since middle school. I enjoy the language and wish to study abroad in S. America in college, and I do, and always have done well in the class, but I am wondering whether it would be worth it to continue with this class senior year (in terms of what colleges think). If I do not take spanish, that will leave me open to probably take another AP class, such as psychology or statistics, in addition to the 2 I am planning on enrolling in next year. And, if this helps, the main schools I am looking at as of now are UPenn (which has a language requirement), Duke, Brown, and Michigan. Thanks for your help

I think taking a foreign language through senior year looks REALLY good (especially to the top-tier schools you’re applying to). Colleges like to see tenacity when it comes to mastering another language (you and I both know it’s not easy). Furthermore, if you plan to study abroad in college, I think continuing study in Spanish is essential for success. While AP Psych/Stat are good classes, I think colleges hold foreign language in a higher regard. Just my opinion.

Definitely agree with kiterunner here. And also, if you do plan to continue Spanish in college and don’t take it your senior year, you will regress a lot. Does your school offer AP Spanish? Your post makes it sound like it doesn’t, but if it does, I would highly recommend it. I am currently in AP Spanish and I love the class.

Consistency usually looks good on college apps.

If you’re completing Spanish 4 (or higher) this year, even selective colleges would view your language studies during high school to be good, and so you can take an alternate course without compromising your application. If you’re now taking Spanish 3 then you it would be wiser to continue with Spanish 4 in your senior year than to take an alternate course.

I’ve taken through Spanish 4, and after this I am done. Never liked Spanish, and hoping that taking through 4 will be enough but if you do and think you need it for studying abroad then you need to take it next year.
