I’ve been deeply interested in founding a sci-fi club at my high school. I am currently a Junior and would take the President position should I create it.
However, how much would this truly help my application (generally, without providing all of my stats)? According to CC, I apparently have a “glaring lack of leadership” in my ECs, and I’m hoping this could act as a nice initiative-EC.
Thanks in advance for the insight!
Depends how seriously you take it and whether or not there’s actually any depth.
If you’re really “deeply interested” in starting this club, start it!
Sure, admissions officers want to see you succeed in high school, but “succeeding” means you know how to set your own goals, meet your own goals, and surpass your own goals. So get excited about this club, then use that excitement to push yourself to your max, to create a club that you, and others, find fulfilling.
Shape your school experience into what you want it to be. That’s leadership—vision, and execution.
But I’m done rambling.
Appreciated! I imagine it’ll be a hit; a Smash Bros. club started this past year and is doing amazingly well.
Now, finding a teacher that’s willing to stay 2 1/2 hours after school to watch a movie? That’s another story.
Starting a club is often used as a resume booster for top schools (and adcoms know that) so that’s something to think about, but if it’s something you’re really interested in go for it. Just know it won’t do much if anything to help you when applying to schools
I’m actually surprised colleges don’t value this more! What screams initiative more than starting something brand new at your school for people to participate in?
I agree with you on this one but I also know that adcoms look for depth in clubs. For example, as the president of this club, will your duties be limited to choosing which film you will watch together or will it expand on that? When you have a club that is beneficial for its members and when it offers the members something that they can’t do on their own, then you know that you have a fulfilling club that has a “potential” to be a good resume booster without any negative effects. With that being said, this shouldn’t be your primary reason in starting a club to say the least.
Definitely not the only reason. Responsibilities I can imagine as of now would probably be scheduling, agendas, and advertising. Others as necessary.
There are many ways to demonstrate your initiative. But a sci-fi club sounds fun.
Indeed. Definitely outside of the box, and it will be guaranteed to generate interest in the classics!
