How easy is it for high school students in America to get internships? By internships I mean career oriented work like working in places such as law firms, chemical companies etc.

It is not easy. There aren’t many structured programs/positions with a traditional job application process. More often than not, the student takes advantage of a personal relationship with someone at the firm to secure a position. Keep in mind that a typical high school intern will typically not contribute much to the bottom line but does use a firm’s resources and time.

Thanks. I’m a US citizen living in Pakistan and it’s fairly easy over here to get internships. I interned at a mechanical engineering department of a company during the summers so just wanted to see how much of an advantage stuff like that would give me when I apply to colleges over there.
