I'm currently a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist and I have Princeton listed as my #1 school, despite offers of more than $100,000 if I were to change my preference. I was wondering if Semifinalist and listing Princeton as my #1 has a significant impact on my application (not that I don't have very strong SATs, recs, or ecs).

Yeah, it's definitely a plus. Possibly a hook. lol....

plenty of applicants have nms...i mean there are 15,000 semifinalists in the country...

yeah i think it was stupid that i listed them as my #1 school, they probably don't give a lot of scholarships/or any to NMFs

Small state schools said if you indicated them as your first choice, they'd give you $12,000

lol its equivalent to double legacy :p. i got an offer for $135k from harvard, but Princeton is really my no.1 choice. :)

btw, how do you have low SAT scores if you got NMSS? are u just from a state w/ lower standards? in NJ, 222 or higher only get semifinalist status

i'm pretty sure all you're doing is passing up a possible scholarship but not listing a college that participates in nms, because princeton does not

Maybe TopherW had low SATs but high PSATs?
Mine were almost "equivalent."

You misread me. I was saying "it's not as if" I have low SATs. I've gotten 800s on all my SAT IIs (MathIIc, US history, Physics). Sorry for the use of the double negative, hah.

hmmm....does the college care if you can't become a finalist due to your citizen status (or lack there of)?

wait, being an nms is like a double legacy??? what if i just wrote "no preference" on my sheet thing for it? still, nms= double legacy would be sweet

topherW...are you applying to princeton ed?

wow, like 5 ppl posted in a minute lol

why would it be double legacy???? PSAT measures almost the same thing as SAT....that's like saying that if you got over 2250 in your SAT you would get legacy status....

nms is nowhere close to double legacy...like i said before, there are 15,000 semifinalists in the nation...it's a nice award, but it's by no means a hook

No, I unfortunately chose not to. I wanted to wait until I had completed my Eagle Scout project. However, I have had "unofficial" interviews with a number of local interviewers that I happen to personally know and will be getting a letter of recommendation from one of them.

oh drat my hopes are dashed :(

Haha.. NMSF is nowhere near a hook.

lol guys, i was kidding. its not equal to double legacy. sarcasm

Princeton doesn't give NMS scholarships.

that's what i thought
