Value of Previous School in Transfer?

Hello!
I went the College of William & Mary my freshman and did not do very well (2.7 GPA), have been spending this year at a local California community college where I have been getting all A's so far, but grades are not yet posted because the semester has not yet ended. I would love to go to UC Berkeley or UCLA, which is why I am spending this year in a CC- UC's are supposed to accept a certain number of CC students.
I am wondering how much the previous school is taken into consideration because I would think that a student from a good school may have a better chance getting in despite a bad GPA than someone at a worse school with the same or slightly better GPA.
Does anyone have any wisdom to share? Or experiences with the weighting of a previous school in transfer applications?

Thanks!
