value of sending "free score reports"

D, a HS junior, is about to take the SAT I for the first time on 3/15. Depending on how she scores, she may or may not retake. She'll also take the ACT at least once and a few more SAT IIs and 3 AP tests at the end of this year. Aside from saving a few $$$, is there really any point to sending out the 4 free reports at this juncture? She is just going to start visiting colleges she is interested in on her spring break this April, and will visit more schools this summer and early fall. So, since until she visits she doesn't truly know which colleges she is interested in applying to, does it make sense for any reason to send out these free score reports now? Thanks, Ms. L

Not unless she is sure of a school and you can’t afford to send the scores separately. If you can, wait until you see the scores and she knows which schools.

Thank you, Erin’s Dad!

Ya, I never sent out my free scores since I didn’t know how I would do on the test. However, if the schools your daughter will be applying to do not use the Score Choice option where you can pick which scores you want colleges to see, then I don’t think it would make a difference since colleges would see them eventually anyways. It ended up costing me a lot of money to send them all…:/

hmmm, thanks … didn’t think of the non-score-choice schools. Forgive my ignorance on this stuff, I imagine this has been discussed here before. So, if she applies to those schools that don’t accept Score Choice, does it cost extra to have all scores from every sitting submitted on the same report? Shall I be setting aside a few more pennies??? … yeesh!!!

Ms. Ladybug, let’s say your D takes the SAT another time, and she’s also taking a couple of SAT IIs. At the time of the last test she takes, until about a week after the test, she can request a score report to be sent to her schools of choice (4 will be sent for free, and you pay for the additional schools). Unless specified otherwise, ALL test scores - her first SAT, her second SAT, and her SATII scores - will appear on the score report. It doesn’t cost extra to list all exams. But if she chooses to not send the free score reports before the cut-off date, she (you) will have to pay for each school the report is sent to… in other words, you won’t get the four free ones. But no, it doesn’t cost extra to have all sittings show up on the report.

My junior D is also taking the SAT for the first time on March 13. We’ve decided to send a free score report to National Merit, since she might be in the running for that, and they will need her SAT scores. Also we’re sending one to her safety, because her score will be way above their average and she’s guaranteed to get in, and we might as well send it now.

When she takes the SAT IIs in May, we can decide if we want to wait to see what her scores are before we send them to her other schools. But we will automatically send a free score report to her reach school, because it requires that applicants submit all test scores. This score report will contain her SAT as well as her SAT II scores, so they’ll have everything.

If she decides to take the SAT again, we’ll definitely send a free report to National Merit and to her reach school. Otherwise, we’ll wait until she gets her scores back before picking and choosing what scores to send where (and we’ll pay for those).

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Oregonianmom. That helps much. Good luck to your D, and mine too! Ms. L
