How much weight do colleges such as Tufts & Barnard place on visits made to their campus especially if you are what is considered "average" in stats for their admitted students?

Tufts is HUGE. Look for threads discussing "Tufts syndrome". They are big on demonstrated interest.

Its funny but the top schools such as HYPS don't care about visits! They say explicitly on their websites that they don't take it into account. They know the lure of their name. Its the schools facing a more competitive battle for students that want to see signs you are really interested and not just firing off another app.

Gamom - is your S/D still interested in IR (noticed on one of your earlier posts). I have a rising Junior D who is planning to major in IR. We are planning a DC trip next spring break to check out all the DC and VA area schools we can. We'd like to visit some of the schools in the NE, but haven't figured out when yet. Someone told me about the Ga Tech IR program which is backed by Sam Nunn, but I don't know much about it.

Georgia mom

Yes my daughter is interested in IR. The program at Tech is somewhat new but I know a student who graduated from it last summer and is now in law school. She said the program was strong and growing. We did the DC and Virginia visit over spring break and now will venture to above schools and possibly a few more if they catch my daughters eye.

A lot of schools track your interest using your social security number. Request information. Go to local presentations in your area. If you can't visit in person, contact them and ask if they have a DVD or some type of virtual tour. Emory is a school that is well known for favoring students who have shown interest.
