Value Vs. Name

Ok when it comes to college what do u guys feel is more important.

Me personally, i could be no happier going to the university of arizona for free (instate+scholarship) and hanging out with my friends, studying well, and doing a good job in my undergrad. its not like UA isnt a good school, but i have applied to a bunch of other places (duke, NW, UC, etc) and whenever i ask someones opinion they all tell me that me going to UA would be a waste.

i dont know what to do. should i shell out for a tuition in the 30-40 range and a school that suits my credentials, or go to UA and aim for a good grad school later

right now my priorities are
1. good career prospects post college ( i know a BME degree coming out of duke looks better but does it really matter)
2. good grad school admission (either med school or MBA not sure now)
3. all around college experience

Ok... I'm not going to tell you what to do but I had a similar choice. I was offered a full scholarship, $4000 dollars a year spending money, and travel money to study abroad from my state school. I had always wanted to go to USC or UCLA and when I got into them I wanted to go but couldn't bring myself to give up the free tuition. Now that I'm at my state school I regret the decision more than anything. My friends who are at other schools have had opportunities and experiences that aren't available at a state school and I regret not going to my dream school. (although I'm sure a part of me would have regreted giving up a full scholarship too). I'm trying to transfer out next year--I sent in my application to USC and if I get in i'm going. You'll have to make your own decision but know that whatever happens, if you don't like it you can always transfer.

It sounds like you have already made up your mind and are just looking for validation. You should go to the college of your choice and not where someone else recommends. Certainly you can go to UArizona and have success in a career or admission to graduate school. Your goals do not include vastly different and more challenging academic experiences. If you are accepted and consider going to a very selective school, you should visit first. The environment will be much different and it sounds unlikely to be a match.

Do you not get financial aid?

My EFC is around 30k so its almost full tuition for the UCs

Don't base your college choice on other people's opinions. Just don't. 4 years down the road, YOU want to be satisfied with the choice YOU made- who cares what someone else thinks?

If I were in your shoes (and this is just my opinion!), I would take the UA scholarship and run with it. It sounds like you'd be perfectly happy there, and if you're even considering medical school, coming out of undergrad debt-free would be a definite advantage. There's no point in putting yourself in debt or traveling across the country when you'd be happy at UA.

That said, I think you need to evaluate your choices carefully. Like kaitylin, I was offered a hefty scholarship. I turned it down, though, and I don't regret it. I liked the school, but I'm not sure I could have spent four years there. Fit is very important and hard to measure- if you're SURE you'd be happy at UA, then by all means, go for it. If not, start searching for scholarships. :)
