Vanderbilt 2023 RD Discussion Thread

@sanjosedad it’s fun to know that!

when does it come out?

I found one student who did it at my daughter’s college, Pomona College last Fall. Changed from UC Berkeley to Pomona College!

So has anyone heard anything about when CV scholarships are coming out?

I’m guessing tomorrow for CV via email. That seems to be the trend. It’s been first Wed in March the last two years.

Does anyone have any idea if applying for the CV scholarship gives you a teeny tiny bump in admissions? Does admissions even know a student has applied? I think it’s a separate committee. I’m thinking it shows interest and, even though Vandy says that don’t track interest, it might be a tie breaker if between two candidates from the same high school. Thoughts? Our high school probably sends 50 apps to Vandy in the RD round.

Vandy controls the number of admissions for the students coming from the same high school??

@singingbear Huh? I’m not sure I understand your question. Yes, they compare the kids to each other from the same high school if that’s what you’re asking. They don’t just take the kids with the highest scores and grades - admissions is holistic. But of course they compare these kids since they are comparing apples to apples. All colleges say that there’s no limit to the number of kids they take from a certain school but Vandy has taken 8-10 from our school for the last three years. That seems to be the number they are comfortable taking.

@homerdog , @Sallaw posted this on last year’s thread:
“Here is a list of prior release dates
2009: March 5th, Thursday
2010: March 5th, Friday
2011: March 7th, Monday
2012: March 9th, Friday
2013: March 5th, Tuesday
2014: March 7th, Friday
2015: March 6th, Friday
2016: March 4th, Friday
2017: March 8th, Wednesday”

And last year they came out March 7th(Wednesday). I don’t know if there is a trend there but I’m almost sure we’ll hear something until Friday.

@therealonessa Hm. I saw that too. We didn’t get anything last Friday so i was thinking tomorrow since the last two years have been the first Wed. I guess we will know tomorrow. The decisions last year came in waves starting around 4:00 CST and going until 7:00. Seems like all who got the award found out during that time. Some got their rejections but some rejections didn’t come until later in the week and many went to spam. So, everyone keep an eye on your spam folders.

I don’t know how I feel about the CV at this point. If S19 hits the jackpot, I feel like he has to go to Vandy even though we haven’t visited yet. I know kids are super happy there! Most likely, we won’t have to worry about that situation though. I just hope he’s accepted (7% RD acceptance rate last year).

@homerdog, best of luck to your S19. Even if he is waitlisted, he will have a good shot to get enrolled. Vandy fills about 800 seats from RD. Out of about 3000+ admitted ones in RD, only about 400/500 do accept their admission offer, a low yield rate. That leaves the school to fill in the rest of the seats from wait list.
One of the reasons Vandy’s RD acceptance rate is so low is that the school doesn’t require kids to write any additional essay other than the Common Apps one. That’s a big incentive for the kids to send their application to Vandy. Few years back Swarthmore College dropped one of the college specific essays from their admission requirement; that resulted in 13% increase in application! Best of luck to Class of 2023.

@therealonessa What are the dates you listed above? Are the decision dates for RD admission or for some scholarship? March 8 sounds too early for RD.

@CollegeAdmInfo for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship decision.

@homerdog Thanks for the reply.

How closely are you guys watching the portal? I looked at it yesterday and then again today. I think this sentence is new -

NOTE: MyAppVU portal is the only way to receive your Vanderbilt admissions decision. Any official email communication from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will come from a Vanderbilt.edu email address.

Am I wrong? Has it always been there?

@homerdog sorry about the unclear question up the thread … I was wondering if Vandy admits all the qualified students regardless they are from the same high school. Sounds like there must be a cap. Actually, my D goes to a small private school (70 seniors). 2 already admitted in ED I and another one in ED 2. I think all of them including mine are highly qualified, but I wonder if they would admit my D as 4th??

@singingbear so hard to know, right? I’m just going with the history on our Naivance. 50-60 kids apply each year. 8-10 get in with usually only a two or three ED so that leaves a handful for RD. S19 and his four friends who applied are all NMF and have pretty similar grades, rigor and SAT scores. I guess they could all get admitted or all denied or anything in between. I’m guessing essays and recommendations are going to be important as distinctions.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thought @homerdog usually at most 5~6 applied to Vandy and 0~2 admitted. This year is an exception. So I though 3 is already enough for them?? :slight_smile:

@homerdog
It’s said for a while, possibly since I got the link to my portal. Oh, how many times I’ve read that now!

@albertsax oh thank you!
