Vanderbilt Admissions Question

I'm writing on behalf of my brother who has just applied. He's really worried about getting into this school, and it's been his first choice for years. Here are his accomplishments:

GPA: 3.92
Class Rank: 36 out of 466 (top 1%)
Class President
Graduating with Honors (all AP classes)
Is taking Calculus AP, and Biology 2 AP
Yearbook editor
National Honor Society: Social Chairman
Student Leadership Group: Board of Directors
3 other club memberships
100 hours of community service
Good essays in my opinion
SAT score: 1770 (has take it twice....minimal improvement.)

I feel the SAT score is going to hurt him. My question is, does anyone know of a student being admitted with an SAT score that low? I know they have, but not sure if the rest of the accomplishments are enough since they take a holistic approach to admissions. It's above avg nationally, but not "good" by Vanderbilt standards. What are his chances?

Thank you for your responses.

Top 1% would be the top 5 kids.

Impossible to take “all AP classes”. There is no such thing as AP Physical Education. There are also not enough AP classes to fill a HS schedule for all 4 years.

The 25th percentile for Vanderbilt is 680/700/670. That means people are admitted with lower scores. But, those kids usually have something special about them. Some awesome ability/talent, bad test taker, etc.

Sorry…forgot that zero in there for top 10%. Anyways, I guess the chances are low, but I’m hoping his leadership as class president, editor, etc will at least get him some consideration. He’s been accepted to Texas A&M and Texas so we’ll see. Thanks.
