Whats the atmosphere like at Vandy? I'm canadian, and grew up there, btu I\ve lived the past 3 years in Washington, DC. I'm really interested in the school, but i'm worried it might be too southern/conservative for me...thoughts?

Truthfully it depends on your origin. Southerns think it is too liberal and northerns thinks its too conservative. Me being from Atlanta, my brother, my wife and my son (freshman) thinks it just a good balance. They have really pushed diversity on admissions. Out of 1600 freshman they are represented by over 1000 different high schools. This current freshman class is the best mixed class of all times. So the point is, you will fit in no matter your likes and/or dislikes.

As far as Nashville it is a great city, not as vibrate as Wash. but definately more vibriate than college towns like Athens or Charlotteville. It is not all Country Music. You'll love Nashville.

The people in town and on campus are warm and friendly--always. That is sort of southern, I guess.

My son is a student there, and does not fit the Vanderbilt stereotype, which I think is a little out of date anyway (son was born in New England, spent most of his childhood in the midwest). He hasn't been there long, but seems to like it very much, has made a lot of friends, is already involved in numerous activities. If anyone minds his non-southerness, he doesn't seem to have noticed.

Visit if you can.

this is great, thanks, i really appreciate it. I think i definitely will visit :)

I'm currently a student at Vanderbilt and I'm from New England. The southern aspect is definitely present but I really don't mind it. If you are really anti-southern and don't like the culture then maybe you would have more of a problem with it. I think that there is definitely a southern vibe on campus even though many different regions of the country are represented. Although I do feel that it has a significantly less southern feel than outside the "vandy bubble."

I really love living in a different region of the country. I have never lived anywhere but New England, so for me the change is more interesting than anything else. Also, the weather is absolutely gorgeous!

I personally think Nashville is great, but many students don't go downtown much. But every thursday there are college nights at many of the bars and they are a lot of fun. Most are 18+ too!
