Vanderbilt, Brown, Notre Dam for engineering ?

Hi guys,
I am applying to to some colleges ( Berkley, CMU, Illinois, JHU etc. ) ( CS degree ). I wanted to know about the following univs' engineering programmes ( worth applying or not ) but considering the overall university prestige as well.
(eg. Virginia Polytech's CS program is very very good and among the best but the University in general is okayish ....)

) University Of Notre Dame

) Vanderbilt University

) Dartmouth College ( It's good but I don't know abt it's engineering )

) Washington University ( St. Louis )

) University Of Virginia

Do help. Thank you.

I’ll sort them according to rankings ( US News ) but I don’t have specific info :

College ( universityrank ) (engineeringrank)

Dartmouth (3) (45)
Washington (13) (45)
Vanderbilt (17) (36)
Notre Dame (19) (45)
Virginia (25) (36)

Oh and it would be gr8 if sum1 cud tell abt Uchicago ( engineering ofcourse )

Here is my ranking:

University of Va or WUStL

I am not a big fan of Ivy engineering programs.

UChicago doesn’t offer engineering. It has very good math/cs program, probably similar to the ones at Ivy colleges.

My feeling is that if you are dead set on doing engineering then you are better off going to a bigger school. You will have a better choice in terms coursework and faculty. I have been hearing good things about USC in this regard. USC alumni network is one of the strongest in the industry. How do I know? … :)

) University Of Notre Dame ==> Not great for engg

) Vanderbilt University ==> It’s in Tennessee. You’d want to go to a better-located school + for engineering, not good.

) Dartmouth College ==> I don’t think it offers engineering. Correct me if I’m wrong.

) Washington University ( St. Louis ) ==> Pretty good from what I hear

) University Of Virginia ==> Pretty good!

hey ani, we came to the same conclusion, finally! isn’t it great to have an engineer in the family who knows about this stuff?

Haha, This is my own research man. :P

You meant engineer’s’ right? ;)

^ no, it is singular. u get double dose?

Dartmouth has its own dedicated UG Engineering Department - Thayer School of Engineering. Its one of the top engineering colleges. If you are concerned with engineering as well as research (which I am also looking for), its a GOLDEN one…
and also, you are very well aware of the overall prestige of the university.

No way…

^ Lol. No, but seriously, you guys obsess over rankings far too much. Ever thought about what sort of schools might suit you socially, as well as academically? Prestige means a lot but if you’re unhappy at your college, you’ll be holding yourself back.

My advice to the OP: research the schools further and pay close attention to all the factors you might consider important (some of which you might be currently ignoring). I hope that helps!

harisheena, idk where u get that info about Dartmouth. I don’t what to say but laugh … Sorry.

^ Seconded.

@critics - Thank You for your criticisms…

Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth continues to rank among the nation’s top 50 engineering schools, according to the latest ranking by U.S. News & World Report 2010.

It is also considered one of the greatest institutes for research at post doctoral level…

I accept your criticism if you define top as “top 10 engineering institutes of nation/ world”… Then I would consider my statement as shi*…

If you narrow down the fields, like engineering, or biology, or math then top 50 no longer has much meaning.

If you would read my lines carefully, you will notice that I have written “top 50 engineering schools”…

Yes, that’s what I was replying to.

OK…
10char

What abt wisconsin, Univ SouthCal AND Harvey mudd??

Wisconsin (13) > southcal’s (26) ( engineering ) and both are vvvv good in computer Science.

In general, Wisconsin falls behind ( since u’re saying that u’ll compare the overall university prestige and stuff also … ). South Cal’s better in that sense …

Abt Harvey mudd … I dunno … I have seen many posts praising it ( here on CC ) but don’t no much abt it …
