Reflection
Strengths: Test scores, GPA, class rank, course rigor
Weaknesses: didn’t feel like one existed for Vandy
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Vandy is a great fit for my D and her interests. It was very easy and natural for her to demonstrate that through the application process
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted UGA Honors and UVA Likely Letters from Notre Dame and Dartmouth, waiting to hear from Duke, Yale & Princeton

**General Comments: ** We invested in this one by showing clear interest all along the way. We toured campus, attended Black & Gold and the Road Show, and even went to a football game up there one weekend. I would suggest that as admission becomes ever more difficult, establish a strong relationship even if just through emails with your Adcom Rep. We were hoping for the CV here, but did not get it. But the attention we gave may have made the difference for even getting in. But don’t overlook the fact that it all starts with being a qualified candidate through your stats.

Reflection

Strengths: I had strong recs, ECs, scores, essays, etc. Most importantly, I sold myself as an artist and a writer, so my hook was good.
Weaknesses: My senior year grades were weak, and I don’t really do any community service.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m honestly not sure. I guess my hook was strong, but my grades weren’t great, and my app wasn’t tailored to Vandy. High scores and strong essays must have done it.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So far, deferred from Brown and Yale-NUS and accepted at Hong Kong University, Kenyon, Carleton, and Middlebury.

General Comments: I applied to Blair and got rejected, so they sent me on over to the college of arts and sciences. That meant I didn’t submit a create writing supplement, and I didn’t interview. I wasn’t expecting to get in, but it was a nice surprise. Congrats to all who got in, and good luck in your other endeavors to those who did not.

[/list]**General Comments: ** I told myself I wouldn’t fall in love with any one school. I’m a social person and can be happy at any school, but after touring Vandy it was far and away my number 1 choice. It’s the only private school in the SEC and not to mention ‘A Tradition Called Raging’. Nashville itself is an a amazing place with a ridiculous number of concerts per year. Vandy offers an unbelievable education and everything about the school, I love. Being waitlisted was definitely a huge bummer for me, but an honor all the same. Congrats to everyone who got in, and those like me who didn’t will find happiness and success at any school in the country; watch.

] Weaknesses: Weak test scores, lower level GPA, no visits, no interview, one weak recommendation
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Likely the fact that I was well rounded and had an engaging story and expressed that story in an engaging
and personal form. I also used many creative analogies to show my creativity.

Recs may not be great because I come from a school were the val and sal go to UGA and the others go to smaller schools in the state (which is great of course, no offense intended). I hate to imply that my teachers don’t know how to write glowing recs, but I choose to be honest.

Not sure exactly where im ending up next year but absolutely thrilled to be accepted to Vanderbilt. Anchor down![/ul]

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): Didn't send
ACT (composite): 34
SAT II: none taken
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.54

Major Awards- Nothing...hah.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars : Varsity soccer, Writing, Dance, Art, Archery, Speech and debate, religious studies, Dance Club President, Part of the 3 man Committee at my boarding school (24/7 leadership position, dealing with peers emotional and discipline problems.)
Job/Work Experience: Dollar store, Small-town Pizza shop
Volunteer/Community service: Over 600 hours of Community service + Multiple self-organized service projects, and one huge Eagle scout-equivalent project
Summer Activities: Traveling
Essays: common app 9/10, or 1/10....depends how you look at it, since I wrote about my problem with drugs and alcohol, and how I overcame that by going to a millitary/therapeutic boarding school , extracurricular 9/10- Wrote about hip-hop dance.
Teacher Recommendation: 10/10, 10/10 (as far as I'm aware)
Counselor Rec: ?/10 (Honestly not sure..don't talk to the guy much. He's pretty busy. But he knows the progress i'm making, through all the reports he gets, so I guess he must have written something good.)
Additional Rec: Pretty good, had some of my counselors write some stuff up.
Interview: Had no chance
Supplementary Material: n/a

Applied for Financial Aid?: yup
State (if domestic applicant): CA/UT
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Millitary/therapeutic boarding school
Ethnicity: Asian (Bengali)
Gender: M
Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): around 60k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have a cousin that goes to Vandy...might have had something to do with getting waitlisted

Reflection

Strengths: test scores (didn't study for my ACT...maybe I should have), going through millitary boarding school, taking some big responsibilities with leadership and peer to peer help. The arts, definetely.
Weaknesses: no awards. Like, at all. Also, getting expelled from highschool.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Family connection, plus maybe an interesting application.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: , rejected from UCSB, UCLA, BU.
Accepted: Pitt, UCR.
waiting from: U of M, U of Colorado Boulder, NYU, Syracuse, USC.

General Comments: Well, I guess I can’t really ask for more, having been expelled from high school and all that. Plus, the essay I wrote about recovery probably wasn’t a good idea. But you know what? Screw it, that’s who I am. I mean, if I have a chance of getting in having given my true story instead of some usual application BS, it’s better than nothing. And even if not, I can still go to Pitt, which is better than where I would have been if I hadn’t decided to turn things around. So yeah, I’m excited, a little eager, but also pretty chill with whatever outcome I might receive.
