Vanderbilt ED1 Class of 2019 Discussion Thread

Many people double major in HOD and in CAS (and double major in CAS alone). There is a lot of flexibility in combining majors and minors across all 4 undergraduate schools. HOD+ Econ seems to be a popular combination. I know many people who are majoring in HOD and minoring in Corporate Strategy(Managerial Studies).

Ya I’m thinking I might go the Econ + HOD route. It just seems like a really good combo of stuff I’m interested in.

@mmnp21‌ Where’d you find the different tracks you could do for majors? I could only ever find specific requirements of the majors when I was looking around

Oh wait nevermind I found it, I’m just blind apparently

<a href=“Home | HOD Undergraduate Major | Human and Organizational Development | Departments | Peabody College of Education and Human Development | Vanderbilt University”>http://peabody.vanderbilt.edu/departments/hod/undergraduate-program/hod_track_summaries/index.php</a></p>

Would PolySci+HOD with a track for ILD be a little redundant?

Maybe a bit, but I feel like you’d get two completely different perspectives on it. I’m sure there’d be overlap in classes though

So I just read for the ILD one that it’s expected you complete the internship internationally! That sounds so awesome!!

@mmnp @nerdfighter23 I applied to HOD and I am planning to double major in Econ and yes it is very manageable but I obviously don’t know that from experience. My sister double majored in HOD and Econ with a minor in Spanish and it worked out perfectly for her. Now, she has a job offer working on the marketing team of Nissan at their headquarters in Nashville! My sister chose the international development track but in all of my essays I’m focusing on how I want to go into community development. I have heard multiple times from my sister that the majority of people in HOD double major and in fact it is one of the most common majors that people usually combine. It works really well when it is supplemented with other areas and if you are interested in ILD then here is a helpful link!

@rebeccaAnn‌ Thank you! Ya I’m planning on the same thing, but I’m still a little unsure of what exactly I want to go into. And I’m sure I’ll change my mind at some point haha (:

Got home from school today and basically spent 2 hours reading through all this stuff and imagining myself at Vandy and ahhhhhh it’s all so wonderful

possible RD applicant here! good luck to everyone for ED! just wondering, for the extracurricular essay, did you guys discuss the activity in general, or linked it to potential majors at Vanderbilt / framed it in a “why vandy” kind of way? :)

@weepingmermaid‌ I discussed how I got involved with and what I learned from my activity, and that was the majority of that essay. But in the last paragraph, I linked it to why I wanted to major in HOD, which is unique to Vanderbilt, so I framed it in a “Why Vandy” way at the end.

Hi guys! I applied ED to Vandy and am so anxious for the results! Do you know if admission might be a little easier if you’re from a state where they only have 1-2 kids from? (getting those numbers from the “where are people from at vanderbilt” map)

@weepingmermaid I didn’t frame it in a “why Vanderbilt” way but I’m sure you could do it that way! But if you are writing about a sport or music or something it might be more of a stretch to link the two. I’m sure that if your activity does influence why you want to go to Vandy then you should mention it

Agreed ^ I didn’t frame it that way but it’s definitely a good idea!

So now that I have realized that I definitely want to major in HOD should i let my admissions counselor know? Like is there some different process for Peabody because you declare you major freshman year? I guess i could wait until i am actually accepted i guess (if i am accepted that is)…

does anybody have any idea when we’re gonna get an email letting us know when decisions will be posted?? I’m so anxious!! Aren’t they supposed to give us a time frame when we will hear back?

Maybe time frame on the day of or before denoting the hours time frame?

@rebeccaann @riptides214 @elizabeth1315 Thanks guys! That was really helpful  I asked because it’s my extracurricular experiences that make me excited about Vandy’s AXLE / unique study abroad programs + want a college with a kind, collaborative spirit that seems to characterize my experiences with Vandy so far  But i guess the link is not entirely overt haha! All the best for december 15!

What time of day do the decisions usually come out? Midnight? Late afternoon?

The first response on last year’s ED1 thread:

“KaMaMom

DD is in!!! ACCEPTED!!!”

I am on CST… so I guess that 12:25pm was in my time zone.
