Reflection

Strengths: I honestly thought that I had an outstanding application mixing my athletic achievement with my academic.
Weaknesses: Not enough volunteering extra-curriculars. I did have volunteer work here and there, but honestly I felt that they weren’t really representative of who I really am, so I didn’t include little volunteer activities that I did for maybe 3 hours at one point on my application just to fluff it up.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not enough diversity with volunteering activities, and not enough “leadership” roles.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Tennessee Knoxville

Volunteer/Community service: Friendship Circle and Animal Friends ^^ above
Summer Activities: got credit for a psychology class at georgetown summer between sophomore and junior year
Essays (rating 1-10, details): wrote about why I want to study chemistry and science in general over my lifetime. Related plato’s cave to my need to push away the shadows of the cave and understand reality, even if reality still may be a shadow. One of the best essays I’ve written, I’d give it a 9.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): two teacher recs from my gen chem teacher and my AP chem teacher. 10/10. AP chem teacher HATED me since 9th grade and now really likes me–he refused to turn in my rec because he thought that would mean that I would stop talking to him (I’d keep bugging him to send in my rec and I don’t have him for a class this year). I’d given them 8’s or 9’s.

Teacher Rec #1: General Chemistry/AP Psych/Science 12 teacher
Teacher Rec #2: AP Chemistry teacher
Counselor Rec: knew me really well, 10/10
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: n/a

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Chemistry
State (if domestic applicant): PA
Country (if international applicant): n/a
School Type: Private Prep
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket: ???
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): white Jewish girl going into the sciences? not sure if I had a hook really

Reflection

Strengths: Strong grades, strong 1600 score, great essay
Weaknesses: flat–majority of my application was about chemistry and science. Sure I had extracurriculars but both my teacher recs were science teachers and my essay was about chemistry.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: strong academically and extremely passionate about what I want to do
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted early @ Tulane with a presidential merit scholarship. I applied to UMich & UMiami EA but am going to withdraw my applications. If I didn’t get into Vandy I was going to apply to Harvard & WUSTL RD.

General Comments:
Visit Vandy. I had my heart set on Harvard and a friend of mine who attends Vandy said to look into it…I kind of ignored him and didn’t believe that I’d even like Vandy–rich, southern, pretentious. I was 2000% wrong. I visited twice and was absolutely floored. Don’t believe any stereotypes about any school and don’t think you know where you’re going to sophomore year. It will change. Feel free to ask me any questions & GOOD LUCK.

ANCHOR DOWN!!!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I: 2360 (800 reading, 800 math, 760 writing)
ACT: 33 (didn’t submit)
SAT II: Didn’t submit these scores
GPA: UW 3.85, W 4.23
School does not rank
AP: World History (5), Calculus AB (5), Lang & Comp (5), US History (5)
IB: school does not offer
Senior Course Load: AP Lit, AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, AP US Government, Economics, Chorus, Creative Writing
Major Awards: Nothing really “major”…National Merit Commended student, AP Scholar with Honor, Varsity letters (in two sports and in academics), Scholar Athlete (9 times)

Extracurriculars: Varsity Cross Country (captain), Varsity Track and Field, Select Women’s and Select Vocal Choral ensembles, NHS, National English Honor Society (committee chair), Spanish Honor Society, Holiday Helpers (organization which donates Easter baskets to kids whose parents come to a food shelter- cofounder)
Job/Work Experience: Barista at a coffee shop, lifeguard from 2012-2014 (summers), assistant swim coach (in charge of all kids aged 3-8)
Volunteer/Community service: As listed above, in sixth grade my friend and I started Holiday Helpers, a small organization which each year which donates dozens of Easter baskets to a local food shelter to distribute to kids…also volunteering for NHS (I was serving dinner at a homeless shelter when I found out I was accepted!!!)
Summer Activities: Nothing really impressive, just lifeguarding and coaching.
Essays: Maybe an 8? I wrote my common app essay about being a barista and learning to make the perfect cappuccino which I thought was funny and creative, and my Vanderbilt essay on Holiday Helpers. I’m generally a pretty good writer, so they should have been good.

Recommendations: Probably 8/9? My APUSH teacher loved me last year (I had a 98 in the class) so his should have been good, and my favorite teacher ever (10th grade HN English and creative writing) wrote my other one- he’s a great writer and I’m sure he spoke very highly of me. I’m sure my counselor rec was good, as I actually know my counselor (unlike most people at my school)
No additional rec and no interview, due to a “technological glitch” or something

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, and received more than the net calculator had projected!
Intended Major: Biology and/or Medicine, Health, and Society (Pre-Med)
State: Virginia
School Type: Public, ~550 students in my class and 2300 or so total
Ethnicity: Mixed (White/Asian)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $170,000 or so…
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection:
Strengths: Test scores, maybe extracurriculars, recs, and essays?
Weaknesses: GPA? No major weaknesses that I can think of.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I applied ED, had a very good SAT score and pretty good GPA/grades, also I had met my admissions counselor twice so maybe she had a good impression of me?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Clemson University (safety- $60,000 scholarship), and had applied to Elon (safety), Wake Forest, U of Richmond, and UVA (was going to apply to Duke and Northwestern ED if I didn’t get into Vanderbilt)

General Comments: I am so excited to be a Commodore and meet my fellow accepted students next year! Anchor down!

Job/Work Experience: Work-Study Student at school system
Volunteer/Community service: 100 hours with Childcare Center
Summer Activities: Worked almost full time for two summers
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9-10, recently I had been second-guessing my ideas, but I believe my idea was very unique and a huge factor of my acceptance. Writing is also one of my strong-suits, as it is one of my favorite things. I also tied my Vanderbilt supplement in with my intended major, so I am sure that helped.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Waived my right and did not see any of my recs. Probably a 10- My AP Lang teacher from Junior year (who will also be my AP Lit teacher) wrote this one. He was very excited about writing it, and I think he knew me very well.
Teacher Rec #2: Also did not see, but probably a 9-10. This was from my Pre-Cal teacher from Junior year. We are also very close.
Counselor Rec: Again, did not see, but I am one of the top students he is over, and he speaks very highly of me.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: My interview went extremely well. She has a current student at Vandy and kept telling me that I was a lot like her daughter, so I am sure she spoke of my fit with the school.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: HOD
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small, Rural, Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation; Also, not sure if this is a hook, but I am fairly certain that I am the only one from my county to ever apply to VU, at least in that last 10 years.

Reflection

Strengths: FirstGen, Essays, Recs
Weaknesses: ACT Score, Maybe ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly think my essays and recs were a huge part of my acceptance. I also came from a small school where students do not go to top schools, so I did really well within my class.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

General Comments:
I am still completely in shock. This is a dream come true. To future applicants reading this and worrying, please please please apply! And if you have and are worrying, you truly never know! I never thought in a million years that this would happen. Please never give up and be proud of your accomplishments! Congrats to all others accepted! Cannot wait to be your classmate! Anchor Down!

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes

State (if domestic applicant): AL
Country (if international applicant): n/a
School Type: VERY small, private (there are 40 people in my grade…)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 80-100
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none that I know of

Reflection

Strengths:
Weaknesses: I wasn’t sure how my essay would compare, I tried to insert humor. My ACT was on the “low”-er end of the applicants I saw (also gpa). Basically I was worried about everything.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea, hopefully it was personality through my essays and recs. BUT I’m so glad I was!! (:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Auburn University, deferred at Tulane (lol), haven’t heard from GT yet

General Comments:
Wow, I have been so stressed and anxious about this. I kept on thinking/saying that I wasn’t good enough to get in. Don’t doubt yourself, and try not to worry too much (trust me, I know it’s hard). I’m honestly about to bake my recommenders some goodies and thank God and the adcom so much for letting me in.
ANCHOR DOWN!

Decision: Accepted

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Long term: (Leader) Model UN Club, (Leader) Operation Smile Club, (Chief Editor) High School Newspaper. (I put in optional common app: have a YouTube Channel for subbing film trailers). Judo practitioner
Short term: 9 MUN conferences with one PGA and one Chair at THIMUN (pretty big deal as MUN goes (haven’t been on CC long to know how much of a big deal). Two Operation Smile missions as volunteer. Working on a short film with friends.

Job/Work Experience: Intern at Academy of Science and Technology (2 weeks), Intern at food company (my dad owns) (4 weeks/2 year).
Volunteer/Community service: I guess above
Summer Activities: Job/Work experience during summer
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I wrote about my apartment building (Soviet era) and my school (international modern institution). Was writing about how one gives me my principles while the other helped gave me opportunities.
I actually don’t like it, but everyone else says they liked it, my mum even teared up a little. I had a consultant who helped me write this and he says he liked it more than the one I wrote by myself (which I liked), so take what I have with a grain of salt.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): School doesn’t let me see

Teacher Rec #1:
Teacher Rec #2:
Counselor Rec:
Additional Rec:
Interview: Didn’t need

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes (my family can only pay 20K)
Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Southeast Asian
School Type: IB-International School (1 out of 2 UN school)
Ethnicity:
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: less than 60K I bet
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Scholarship student maybe? my mum worked at my school so I got waived tuition fees. I guess one unique thing is the fact I’m Southeast Asian poor (middle income for my country), but a student in international school with foreigners and rich people (people here own patches of the city!)

Reflection
I realized how little work I’ve done in high school (about an hour/day) so I’m still regretting a lot of things I should have done. I mean if I really wanted to my IB score could have been 43 or above. This is pretty much colored with pessimism

Strengths:
Weaknesses: Low GPA, Low predicted score, and Financial Aid (I’m asking for quite a lot and that has to be one factor, 50K)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My hook.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Accepted- but I don’t like to define myself by numbers because seeing all of these numbers as an applicant made me anxious and feel like I could not meet those expectations.

Here is my advice to future applicants:

Be yourself. Write essays that someone could pick up off of the floor and know it was yours. Express your passions and interests. Remember that you are not a number, and the admissions counselors will understand that. Don’t get caught up in the nitty gritty because that will only hold you back. Just be the best person that you can be, and make your application a full representation of yourself.

That’s my two cents. Also, if whoever manages this thread needs to delete this comment because it doesn’t follow the format and whatnot, I get that and I won’t be offended. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!

Reflection: I think the biggest thing for people reading this is not to look at these posts as what you MUST have. I remember looking through the class of 2018’s results thread crying to myself because these people all sounded so much more qualified than I was, yet many were getting rejected. Unfortunately there’s no way to know for sure what you MUST have to get in, but if you really want to go here then at least give it a try and don’t stress out too much over this board.

Strengths: high school courses/grades
Weaknesses: essays
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
I’m honestly not sure other than the fact that I worked my butt off the past few years for this, but I do know that I’ve never been happier!
