Hi, everyone! I am pretty sure that I will be applying to Vanderbilt via the Early Decision II program. Whether I am or not, there is no official discussion that I know of for ED2ers. Good luck to everyone, and feel free to post helpful advice, reasons for ED2, stats, and the like.

Hey! I was just deferred from Princeton, so it looks like I’ll be applying ED2 with ya! Hopefully Vanderbilt likes me more than Princeton!!!

do you mind posting your stats?

Ditto for Yale, MOREthanLUCK, though I honestly don’t know why I didn’t do EDI. It was great hearing back from Yale and going through the process with friends, but an acceptance from Vandy would make my day/senior year/life.

I have to say, Vanderbilt was off my radar for a while, but it does seem like an awfully nice school. And its aid that the college’s board estimates that I would get is pretty great compared to similar schools.

The school’s political climate is pretty distinctive — not as far left as other top schools. I’m a devout liberal, myself, and a homosexual one, at that, but I’ve always been attracted to political diversity — something Vandy seems to win at.

Chances for ED II? I LOVE Vandy and I want to get in so badly!

Any insight would be so so so helpful! I really love Vandy! (by the way, feel free to be brutal)

I don’t get it. Besides Caltech (which is weird), Vanderbilt’s the least discussed top college. I wonder why it gets overlooked.

I think it’s because Vanderbilt is in the South and the South does get overlooked for its schools. However, Vanderbilt’s personality is so unique that it would be great anywhere, despite its location. I say despite, but Nashville is an AMAZING city so that shouldn’t even be a question.

Futrbroadcastr - I’d say your chances are pretty swell, but I’m just another student. Check out this website called Parchment to give you a rough estimate for your chances, but as you know admission is dependent upon what the school needs for a well-rounded, diverse class. In my opinion, you definitely bring this diversity to the table.

hey guys, i got deferred from UPenn ED so i’m applying ED2 to vanderbilt. thus far i’ve also been accepted to university of michigan early action. i really don’t know what to expect from vandy, as it’s been extremely selective in the past few years (especially since i’m from the northeast). i’m going to post my stats and it would be great if you guys gave me feedback. please be as brutally honest as you can!

Uh…you’re competitive?

So…Parchment actually tells me that I have over a 90% chance of getting into Vandy (even if I don’t EDII) but I have to say that I’m not very confident about any of this right now. That’s why I’m considering EDII. I just don’t know…

Nashgirl, I agree you are definitely competitive, and great ECs!

Philovitist, did you make a decision?

Hey guys,
So recently I was rejected by Johns Hopkins in Early Decision, so I applied Early Decision II at Vandy, which is my dream school by the way. I have wanted to go to Vandy for as long as I can remember, but took a chance on Johns Hopkins and was not allowed to apply to Vandy for EDI. But I wonder if I am competitive enough.
I have a 4.0 GPA, a lot of extracurriculars, no AP classes because my school doesn’t offer them, and a 26 on my ACT. From what I can see, my ACT is really low to get in I missed the deadline for me re-take so I had to apply with the scores that I have.
I am White/Asian and live in AK. Can anyone chance me?

VandyAnonymous, there’s still hope that exists despite your ACT score. How were your essays/recommendations? Also, I have friends who applied EDI, had average scores, then retook the tests. They submitted better scores past the deadline; Vandy received them nonetheless, and they got accepted. Maybe you can give the SAT a shot following the same process.

Just to be safe though, if you feel that you need more time for testing, there’s always regular decision. If you get a 32+ score, with intense studying and tutoring even, you could have a significantly better shot than before.

Thanks for the encouragement Wallacea! I was told that I had great essays and I read my recommendations when my teachers turned them in. They were really great! My only problem with re-taking the ACT is that I won’t get my scores back until Feb. 23rd which is way too late for EDII. Should I re-take and apply RD or stick with what I have right now?

Most people that have spoken to me have been kind but have told me that it is highly unlikely that I get in, so thank you Wallacea. I know my chances aren’t great, but I am persevering because I love Vandy so much.

Does vandy waitlist EDII applicants?

No problem, VandyAnonymous. Looking at previous threads, I’ve seen people with 33s and 32s get rejected both early and regular. Of course, there have been 30s and 31s that have been admitted. It is such a gambol and is dependent on the individual. I know that ED as a whole gives applicants almost a 1 in 4 chance of admission, versus 17-18% in the RD pool. Nonetheless, people fare well in the RD pool when they have high scores, great ecs, high academic achievements, and the like. I don’t want to steer you wrong, but increasing your score would really boost your chances. It is a personal decision and you must make it in the end; if you love Vandy that much and it’s meant to be (sorry, I sound like a romantic here), you will get there in the end. Perhaps submit a letter explaining your situation or call the admissions office stating your dilemma and ask for advice on how to proceed. Since the person you contacted recommended increasing your scores, above all I would do that and try to talk to him/her ASAP.

Anxiousanon95, EDI applicants were either accepted or rejected. Comments on the actual admissions blog stated that deferrals to RD happened only in extremely rare cases, so I highly doubt applicants are waitlisted.

anxiousanon95,
People are rarely waitlisted from Early Decision, but it does happen. Most of the time, Vandy likes to keep their waitlist open for qualified Regular Decision applicants.

@VandyAnonymous @Wallacea not to correct you, but looking at the past admission blogs, Vanderbilt said it was about a 14% acceptance rate regular decision (and yes, at least last year, it was around 1/4 acceptance for ED…no idea about this year. they received more applications than last year for early). I don’t want to tell you to change your application from edii to regular, but our vanderbilt admission counselor straight up told us that if we wanted to be competitive, go ahead a get an ACT score around a 32 or better, which is 1400+ (Critical Reading + Math) on the SAT. Then again, it’s a holistic review process, so if you did well in other areas and showed yourself in your essay, then you have just as good of a chance.

Best of luck to everyone.
