Vanderbilt Fall '11 Transfer

Hi! I'm new around here but I've been reading posts on here for quite some time. I have a few questions I was hoping to get input on. I am going to apply as a transfer for Fall '11 to Vanderbilt...

I live 20 minutes from Nashville, does this provide any advantage versus an out-of-state transfer applicant? With some schools, even private ones, it does.

I am currently attending a community college, but will be at MTSU in the Spring...Is my community college background a disadvantage?

Do taking any of the SAT subject tests provide an advantage or make you stand out as an applicant? What about CLEPs?

I graduated when I was 16 by taking the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) and getting my diploma equivalency. I'm 17 now. Is that a major disadvantage? I can't find anything on the Vanderbilt web site about GED or other special circumstance applicants.

I have a really good GPA, currently a 4.0, but I'm taking 19 credits this semester and that may change. I also do some volunteering at a hospital and have a part-time job...anyways, I just want to get ALL possible advantages. I would ask a guidance counselor these questions but I think it's a bit premature. I really appreciate any input at all!! Thanks for reading!

-Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth. I will try to answer your questions the best I can.

There is no advantage or disadvantage when it comes to admissions at Vanderbilt because of proximity. You are right that there are some top private universities like Cornell and perhaps BYU that offer some advantages for in-state students, but Vanderbilt isn’t one of them.

When I spoke to Vanderbilt representatives, I was told that they take community college students just as they would students from four year universities. Transferring from your community college to Middle Tennessee State may not necessarily give you the edge you are looking for. If you keep your GPA as high as possible, you should be fine.

I’m not sure how much SAT II’s matter as a transfer student. They may hold more weight if you are transferring as a sophomore than if you transfer as a junior. I can’t verify this. All I was told was that SAT reasoning or ACT with writing was required. I don’t know if they even look at SAT II’s. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Another question I can’t verify, sorry. Perhaps an [admissions counselor](http://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/undergraduate-admissions-counselor.php) can better answer this for you. I would ask now, because you may have more questions later. March 1st will be here before you know it.

Hey, I have decided to apply to Vandy for Fall 2011 as a junior. Elizabeth and I have a couple of similar problems, I too go to a community college in Oregon which I transferred into from a small liberal arts college (DePauw) cause I did performed very bad there. However at Linn Benton Community College (LBCC) I have kept within 3.4-4.0 for the last 3 semesters and this semester I am taking 24 credits.

I am not sure how much of an impact will the fact that I go to an out-of-state community college have on my application. If it helps in anyway I can transfer to Oregon State University (OSU) and do my Winter and Spring 2011 semesters there.

Another I question I have is, will Vanderbilt hold off my admission decision until have access to my Spring 2011 semester grades. Since both OSU and LBCC operate on quarter system my spring grades will not be available until June 10th. However I really want them to see my spring grades as to provide them with as much evidence as possible to cover up for my poor performance at DePauw.

Thanks

Correction-
My GPA range at LBCC is 3.8-4.0

Thanks tons, BGKing, for your response!! It was very helpful. :)

Rayeed, since I’ve done tons of research on the Vanderbilt transfer process, I actually kinda know the answer to your question. No…I don’t think you can request that they wait to give you a decision on admission. However, I read that many transfer applicants for Fall 2010 at Vandy were asked to send a Spring Grade Report (SGR). So there is a chance that even though you probably can’t ask them to wait, they will want to wait anyways. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks a lot elizabeth, btw whats your intended major? Mines is economics. And since you live around Nashville, how is it like?

No problem! Right now, if I ended up going to Middle Tennessee State University, it would be Social Work. But if I could transfer to Vanderbilt I think I’d do a double-major in Communications Studies and Public Policy Studies. One of the huge reasons I want to go to Vanderbilt is because they have so many more choices available for majors that interest me.

As for Nashville, it’s an interesting place. Lots of rednecks, to be honest. I’m from San Diego so it was a shock to me. Also lots of country music. The city is cool, though. I think if you were living on campus at a college here it would be a great place to be. Downtown is awesome. The area Vanderbilt is in, Hillsboro, is really awesome. You can ask me any specific questions if you want.

I am really worried about they are going to take the fact that I go to an out-of-state community college.

I am from a CC too. Going to apply to Vanderbilt for next fall. My intended major is neuroscience and probably do a double major in political science. :)

Anyone here trying to apply with a 3.0-3.4 GPA?

I think I’m going to have anywhere from a 3.3-3.5. I’m also coming from NYU so I hope that helps?

I am adding this here from the other thread here - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vanderbilt-university/1011219-transfer-fall-11-a.html</a></p>

I am contemplating if I should retake the ACT or SAT since the deadline is coming up.

Here are my stats:
HS:
Graduated 41 out of 255 with an unweighted GPA of 3.55.
Highest ACT score was a 24 with a 7 on writing my senior year.
I did take the SAT, but I like to think that I never took it.
I ran Track all four years and Cross Country my 10, 11, and 12 year. Varsity every year.
I was inducted in BETA my sophomore year.
I was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society my senior year.
I was part of HOSA, FBLA, and DECA clubs.
In my junior year I was accepted into a clinical internship class that I participated in my last semester of my senior year. I worked at a local hospital four days a week for ~4 months.
The last semester of my senior year I was recognized as a Tennessee Scholar and was awarded with the Educate & Grow Sumner County Scholarship that paid full tuition to Volunteer State Community College for two years.
I took three dual enrollment classes through VSSC my senior year; Pre-Calculus I and English 1010 and 1020. I received a ‘B’ in those courses, unfortunately.
I did various volunteer jobs including working at the elementary school, fundraisers for track and cross country, christmas fundraiser for DECA, etc.

CC:
I have been a student at Volunteer State Community College since fall of 2009.
My current GPA is 3.3 and after this semester should be around 3.4.
I have a completed a rigor of courses including Calculus, General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Biology, along with prerequisites.
I will be graduating with an Associates in Math and Science degree next semester.
I was accepted into the National Society of Leadership and Success last year and was awarded the National Excellence in Leadership award.
I tutor English and Algebra at the moment.
The negatives about my college transcript: I received a ‘D’ in Gen Chem I my first semester, took it the next semester again and received a ‘B’. I took Organic Chemistry I a few weeks of this semester but dropped it so I could focus my time on General Biology I.

I would love some great advice on making my application stronger.
One thing I plan on doing is volunteering at the same hospital I worked at my senior year of high school over winter break.
I really would like some feedback on if I should retake the ACT or SAT.
I have an identical twin brother with similar statistics who should be posting soon.

Thanks!

I transferred from an out of state community college into Vanderbilt. If you have any questions just PM me.

does anyone know the average stats for vanderbilt transfers?

Applying as a sophomore for next year. Currently have a 4.0 from a selective LAC, but I feel like my SAT is holding me back (1250 on old, 1940 new)! ahh

I applied to UMD for spring, will it be a problem if I go? or should i just stick it out at my current college?

I am going to be a sophomore next year and I want to transfer to another school with a higher academic caliber than the one I am currently attending- I chose the wrong schools when going through the original application process.

I heard that it is somewhat easier to get into Vanderbilt as a transfer? Is this true? Maybe you guys could tell me what you think on my chances of getting in. Here are my stats:

High School:

GPA (weighted): 4.65
GPA (unweighted): about 3.8

Those are some of my stats…what does everyone think??

I have a question about the application process. My current school runs on the quarter system and therefore, I will only have one quarter completed by March 1st. How is that going to work?

I do not believe it will be a problem. This thread from last year has a lot of great information that might help.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/861629-vanderbilt-transfer-fall-2010-a.html</a></p>

I got rejected from Vandy last year when I applied ED as a HS senior. I’m now trying to transfer from a small liberal arts college because Vandy is my dream school, does anyone know if previously applying will help my chances?
