Vanderbilt Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

@ketchup23 the university specifically told you that the extension would be void if they reach their target number of students? That stipulation doesn’t seem fair but I guess they can make their own rules. As of this moment it sounds like you are already at risk with the first school.

Whats your plan if they reach the target number before you deposit and you don’t get into Vandy?

@ketchup23 unless vandy has a uniquely good program for you, a unique experience you think they’ll offer, or you’re hoping for a financial aid package, you should heavily consider putting a deposit.

Being in one city over the next is less important than going to a college that fits you and takes care of all of your needs (program-wise and financial-aid-wise).

@ketchup23 I know it’s not a perfect situation, but do NOT wait things out. In the worst case scenario, you’ll end up staying at your current school – this isn’t too bad if your current school is around as good as the one requesting a deposit, but clearly you’re wanting to transfer for a reason and it’d be really sad to have your efforts go to waste if you end up rejected by Vandy. You might have an amazing application, but with how unpredictable selective schools can be with decisions, this is not a risk worth taking (especially given Vandy’s habit of waitlisting a ton of transfer applicants and no one really getting off that waitlist in previous years). Good luck!

I really appreciate all the comments! It has been eating me alive trying to make a decision on what to do. I’ll likely give Vandy this week to release decisions as I’m sure there are plenty of other students waiting out this week like me and trying to make a decision. Of the 7 places I applied to (did not want to risk having to go back to my school lol) only three have released decisions and I’ve mainly been surprised how there is no standard for transfer decisions!

I’m thinking that Vandy will release their first wave this week, if they don’t they’re gonna have poor enrollment numbers for transfer students because I, and I’m sure many other students are in the same boat as you @ketchup23

I am a bit nervous about Vanderbilt. If I don’t get accepted, my problem is over, but if I do get accepted I am not sure what to do. I have done lots of research and even spoken to a few friends who go to Vandy and think that I would like it a lot; however, I have never been to Nashville before. I had planned to visit if I was accepted, but now with COVID I am not able to. I am not sure if I should consider Vandy if I get in or go to somewhere I am more familiar with. Any advice?

Is Vandy your first choice?

I know, it’s such a tough time to make a decision right now when we can’t visit and really get a vibe of a campus/city. I was lucky enough to actually be able to visit Nashville and tour campus before the pandemic and I personally fell in love with the city and the school even more. But I think now all we can do is the next best thing—reading about Nashville, looking at pictures, doing Vanderbilt’s virtual tour, watching YouTube videos made by Vandy students, etc… If you think you could like Nashville then there’s a chance you probably would. But if there’s another school you KNOW you’d be happy at then committing there would also be fine because wherever you go, you will make the best of it!! It’s really all any of us can do right now <3

@yankeefan20 I didn’t really think about what my first choice was. I have no idea.

@guudluck my advice is not to worry about Vandy until you know your decision. I know for me this waiting period has made me have lots of ups and downs in terms of thinking “I think I have a chance!” or “I’m not gonna get in…,” but in the last few days I’ve just let that ish go, lol. We’ll hear when we hear - worrying about it won’t change anything. If you get in, you can worry about it all you want then

@niniwah thanks that makes sense

@niniwah Same, I spent all of April feeling constantly on edge, browsing CC nonstop comparing myself to applicants from previous years, etc. At this point, I’m not devoting more energy to dwelling on when decisions will be – the bottom line is that nobody truly knows and there’s nothing I can do about my chances at this point anyway. Might as well not be distracting myself from current schoolwork with 24/7 anxiety.

At this point I don’t even bother logging in to check portals anymore. I check my CC email alerts from bookmarked threads and if someone has posted a decision I look but otherwise I’m not putting much energy into this. And honestly I kinda don’t even care what the decisions are I just want to know so I can move forward. Universities that do things in waves are particularly annoying.

I think there’s a greater problem with the transfer process. It’s not nearly as standardized as applying as a high school senior. It’s not like only 100 people transfer each year…

I don’t even bother looking at people’s stats on here. I think a lot of people lie lol. But, each one of us is unique in our own regards and are judged on an individual basis.

Is anyone currently in finals week at their current university?

yeah it’s my finals week! super stressful dealing with all of this at the same time, but that’s life i guess

I’m in that phase right before finals week that’s just as stressful due to a massive amount of projects (CS here). Good luck with both your exams and decisions, everyone!!

I’ve got finals next week!

Yup, finals season here too. Hard to stay focused!

I have a question! It’s okay if no one knows this is kinda a weird situation!
Over quarantine, I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of community service and outreach…
Do I notify the university?? Or do i wait to see if i’m waitlisted and do it then??
And if I do it before, should I just email my admissions counselor? I just feel like I’ve sent her enough emails haha I don’t want to annoy her and make it go the other way
