@SophTaf and @trfer8827 What do you mean transfers have to live off campus? Are you talking about everyone having to live off campus because of Corona or just transfer students have to live off campus because of insufficient housing?
***I know they were building some huge dorms and maybe they had to stop building due to the pandemic? I mean that would definitely cause a shortage in housing since some dorms were to be completed soon so maybe they will be delayed due to a work stoppage???
Actually, I think this link puts that question to rest?
https://www.vanderbilt.edu/transfer/transfer-student-move-in/
The last time I was in Nashville was early March, and they were still in the middle of constructing the new residence halls. I assume corona delayed those and as a result they donāt have on-campus housing for transfers, and will likely allow more seniors to live off-campus. Nashvilleās getting pretty expensive though which could be an issue for a lot of students.
Yeah, it is a HUGE building! Well, unless the admits have heard something I have not, I would assume they would do whatever they had to do to make it work. Vandy even was renting out nearby buildings to make sure they could put people in housing. They are incredibly stubborn now about allowing anyone to live off campus- even seniors have to get permission. Maybe things changed due to this pandemic tho. Everything else has!
@HarmanB Which is your #1 school? Have you heard back from anywhere?
The admission decision letter stated that all transfers will be required to live off campus so it looks like they donāt have sufficient housing for all of the student body.
OH WOW! Thanks @iconicqueen What are you planning? DO you wanna go to Vandy? I was rejected by Cornell (my #1 School) and accepted to UChicago last week. BUT VERY $$$$ā¦so just waiting on Vandy now.
@HarmanB Decisions will be released at the same time every week, Thursday, at the same time, just before 5:00 p.m. C.S.T. (I THINK IT IS 5- it will be whatever time it was today) Anyway, it becomes less likely to be admitted as each week passes, but they definitely keep on admitting until the first week of JUNE AT LEAST.
@Transferohno Vandy for sure. Iām waiting on Penn which is out tomorrow, and was waitlisted at UCLA and Duke. Iām a little surprised at my lack of success in this process so far since I really thought I was strong applicant.
So far Iāve only been accepted into UCSD and UCSB, which are not a good fit for my career path, so Iām really hoping I get some positive news soon!
Iāll keep hoping for next week then! How do we send in our Spring grades once theyāve been finalized? My HS transcript also wasnāt sent to Vandy until April 29 because of several mistakes on their end. I wonder if that had something to do with it & means Iāll be read last!
The lack of housing is a shock and will probably change things for me. It will be very difficult finding a dependable lease with coronavirus right now. Itās disheartening to think that Vandy isnāt offering much assistance in this area, despite being known as a school very open to transfers.
Edit: Not to mention this link, which still says on-campus housing is required for the Fall: https://www.vanderbilt.edu/transfer/your-new-vu/#housing-application
@HarmanB Duke is incredibly tough. I mean they have a 5% or less admit rate. Waitlist is pretty good, actually! This year I would follow-up like crazy with Duke if that ends up looking like a good option. This is the best year ever for waitlisted students. Did you apply to Wharton or Penn A&S? You have a good chance getting off the WL at UCLA.
ABOUT Spring grades. Which State are you from? Send them in if they are really great!
Yeah Duke was definitely a stretch, and Iām glad I was at least considered for the waitlist! I applied to A&S for Economics; I think Wharton external transfers are exceedingly rare so I figured Iād have much better odds at CAS.
Iām hoping I was just waitlisted at UCLA because I have one major prep class in progress. Iāll still keep my 4.0 this semester which will hopefully help. Just getting frustrated having to wait this long to know where Iāll end up!
@scaevola19 It sucks, but yeah, I would not sign any lease in Nash until you find out for sure if school will reopen and that could be July.
DUKE and WHARTON Want HIGH Test Scores. They are ALL about the scores.
And @HARMANB if you need to send in your grades- here is a link to the counselors, just punch on your state and voila- there he/she is!
Hey guys, I made a GroupMe for accepted transfer students so we can start talking about housing etc before the Facebook group becomes official.
It keeps not letting me post because of the linkā¦ so please PM me if you want to join!!
also sorry if it randomly just posts 2/3 of these similar messages with the link haha.
@Transferohno You are right, which causes some major problems. If school does get cancelled for the Fall, you will need a landlord willing to sign a contract that guarantees the ability to back-out. Also, finding affordable living near campus will be difficult enough.
By far the biggest problem though is the separation from the campus community. Vandy has been making a major push to have students live on campus throughout their entire undergraduate experience. It seems that āresidential lifeā is a priority for the university, but transfers are excluded from that. This just seems like a major red flag that Vanderbilt is unwilling to offer the same opportunities to transfer students that they have given in the past.
Iāll have my college email my transcript to him then! My test scores are pretty strong - 1530 SAT, 8 APās with all 5ās. I donāt recall if Penn or Duke accepted subject tests, but those were all 800ās as well.
@scaeola19 I can guarantee you that Vandy wants (or wanted) every transfer on campus. They practically put a gun to my cousinās head when he transferred there last year and wanted to live at home (he is from Nash), They said NO WAY. So must be a construction delay. They have some very impressive buildings going up. I have not been there in about 6 months, but they are super big and super nice. They did rent out buildings. Their housing office is despised, but get in touch with them, anyway, and see if they can help you find something off campus with some protections for you in case of school closing. They have to do something in that regard.
