Vanderbilt Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

@cusnew i applied to college of arts and science

@Transfersssss I am from a CC and I was admitted if that helps!

@mlplover69 Sorry for the confusion. According to your profile, you go to Haverford or have previously attended (correct me if Iā€™m wrong). I was only referring to students from CC who havenā€™t attended a 4-year institution before. I havenā€™t seen any students admitted directly from a CC who only attended a CC. Iā€™ve seen people who transferred from a 4-year to a CC and get in, and Iā€™ve also seen people transfer from a CC to another 4-year and get accepted. Maybe there are a few I donā€™t know about, but it seems almost impossible from what Iā€™ve seen.

How much grants and loans?

Iā€™m from a CC and was waitlisted at Vandy. Also waitlisted at Duke, and even UCLA despite being from a California CC & completing all requirements. Bummer.

For those of us who were waitlisted, is it alright to send in an additional letter of rec along with a LOCI to our admissions representative?

@Transfersssss omg thatā€™s so interesting! Your point makes a lot of sense! I hope itā€™s not the case though; they would be missing out for sure :frowning:

@Yankeefan20 no loans!!! A lot of grants as well. Woo! B) What really helped me is sending in an extra letter of rec too @HarmanB

@mlplover69 Did you send the letter of rec yourself or have the person send it for you to your admissions counselor? Thanks!

@HarmanB Did you apply to coe?

@cusnew I sent it myself to my counselor myself and told him that if they had any questions, then to contact my recommender

@Transfersssss A bit of an old comment but just wanted to reply since I was accepted CAS as a CC student from Houston. Iā€™ve never previously attended a four-year and decided to apply to Vandy since I wouldnā€™t have been able to stay in Houston for another year. My highschool stats were also mediocre asf so itā€™s really surprising I got in. Iā€™ll take it though. Still deciding between vand or rice.

@Sam000059 glad to hear of at least one success story. Youā€™re definitely one of the only ones Iā€™ve ever seen or heard about. I still canā€™t say that Iā€™d recommend CC students to apply. It just seems like such a rare occurrence compared to pretty much every other T20. When I was in the Rice zoom call, 4/5 of the current students were CC transfers. It was really obvious they valued them and the diversity they brought to campus. I think thereā€™s a lot of evidence to support the idea that Vandy doesnā€™t see/value CC transfers in the same way. I hope that changes.

@cusnew why does it matter if someone applied to CoE

@BeamerCrew It matters which school at Vandy someone applied to because there are separate waitlists.
i.e.If a spot opens up in CoE then itā€™s filled with someone who applied to CoE.

@BeamerCrew Yes, what @boomeranggecko said. I applied to coe and am on the WL.

@cusnew No, Arts and Sciences for Econ

Is it more difficult to get off of a certain waitlist?

Anyone still waiting?

@BeamerCrew No figures are published as to the percent of students that get off of each waitlist for transfers. So I donā€™t think anyone can answer whether or not one waitlist is more difficult to get off than another- and I think it would probably vary from year to year anyway. In past years, a waitlist for transfer students (totally different story for first-year applicants) was essentially a rejection. This year has some more variables in the mix, but no one really knows what that will do- if anything at all.

I get the sense that youā€™re trying to weigh out your odds of whether youā€™ll get off the waitlist. Obviously hope for the best, but you should definitely put down a deposit if you got into another school with an approaching deposit deadline so that you have a spot somewhere for next year. You can always forfeit that deposit and accept an offer at Vandy if you find out that you got off of the waitlist at a future date.
