Vanderbilt or Emory?

What is different about them? I know they are both in major cities in the south. And that's about all...

OK, I'm from California, so obviously I can only speak about what I hear out here, but Vanderbilt beats Emory hands down on just an overall feeling. Vanderbilt not only has a great reputation, it has Division 1 sports, a great sense of school spirit, full professors teaching classes, a beautiful, natural campus which, remarkably, is located in the middle of Nashville. And if you are a music lover, you've got to be amazed that the center of the recording industry is just blocks away from the school. Plus, this from friends going there--it takes unbelievable care of its students. Really---people are very well treated there: great housing, food, free shuttles to the airports, taxi rides, local restaurants as one option on the meal plan...No wonder people at Vanderbilt always look happy! (well, except around exam time, I imagine...)

I would disagree with calidude, that Vandy beats Emory hands down. First of all both schools have the same reputation among people that it actually matters too..(Law Schools, Business Schools, Medical Schools, Large Employers) They both know they are good schools, and if you performed well at them you will be a worthy candidate.

Secondly, being from around Nashville and going to school at Emory I can tell you that Nashville is home to a lot of music, however, most of it is country. Atlanta, is probably the quickest up and coming place for new bands (The Black Lips, Deerhunter, and the majority of Hip-Hop). As a city Atlanta is a lot bigger and has more to offer than Nashville. I know a lot of people who have gone to Vandy and have loved it. Huge greek scene, and most people live on campus for four years (this can get old)

"Vanderbilt not only has a great reputation, it has Division 1 sports, a great sense of school spirit, full professors teaching classes, a beautiful, natural campus which, remarkably, is located in the middle of Nashville."

The only thing that Emory doesn't have here are D1 sports. The school spirit thing is debatable, since we don't have a big sports scene. I would still argue that students generally love Emory. You walk around campus and you see Emory T shirts everywhere.

The two schools offer different atmospheres, definitely, but I don't think one is particularly better than the other for UG study. There are things Emory has that Vandy doesn't and vice versa.

very true, they both are great schools. I was debating between Vandy and Emory for ED, I picked Emory because as a Northerner I felt more comfortable at Emory, where as Vandy was a little too southern for me. I know regardless of where I chose I was going to love the school and if I didn't get into Emory ED I, I was going to do Vandy ED II. Both are remarkable schools with many strengths and few weaknesses.

I agree that I get the impression that Vandy is more southern, and so is Nashville. From what I hear, Atlanta is a fantastic city... i've never heard similar comments about Nashville (I live in the North tho, so country music is not exactly popular).
Plus, maybe the greek scene appeals to some of you, but it kind of annoys me.

realistically, it is foolish to say vandy has a better reputation. not at all. they are both of very decent reputation. If you want to make a judgement, maybe, just maybe you could say that vandy is held in higher esteem in the south but emory is better known nationally, but that's probably unsubstantiated.
i think it comes down to better fit and money issues (need-based and merit schoolarships)

these are two evenly matched schools

if u love the social scene, party, and the girls -vandy

if u want jobs, interns, good weather - emory

personally i would choose emory b/c atlanta just beats out nashville hands down =D but vandy arguably is a good school...

i think at both schools you get all six of those things, its just a matter of where you're most comfortable at
