Vanderbilt or UNC?

So May 1st is coming up and I'm having trouble deciding whether I want to go to Vanderbilt University or UNC- Chapel Hill. Money is not an issue, because I got good deals from both schools. I live in Chapel Hill, NC. I want to study Environmental Science/ Biology and minor in Music. I would love to get involved in research as an undergrad. I really love both schools and do not know which one I'd rather go to! Any advice would be greatly appreciated

She chose UNC according to her facebook (yes, I don’t know this person. yes, I’m an excellent stalker)

bad choice

Yep, bad choice!

Excellent choice!

My D applied to both – anyone want to give me any inside info on either school that will help her decide (if she gets in both…) ?

Don’t let the stereotypes of Vanderbilt being overly Southern misguide you. I was expecting an Ole Miss/Alabama feel (with stronger academics), but it’s much more like Penn. The number of Southerners seems to be on the decline as Vanderbilt continues to diversify its student body.

Also, a friend and I were just discussing the social life and concluded that it’s either Greek or bust. Yeah, you can still find ways to have fun as a non-Greek, but you’re going to have a much harder time doing so than someone at a school where Greek life isn’t big (especially if you want to go to parties where alcohol is present). When guide books say frats dominate the social scene, they mean it.

Waylay00 - Thanks for the info! I have heard that the southern influence can be tough on others (we’re from midwest), but it sounds like that may be old news. Funny you mentioned Ole Miss - her bff is going there. The Commons looks awesome - heard it was based on Duke’s west campus. Again, appreciate your feedback!
