Vanderbilt Parents

So glad you know these details yellow granite! They are emailing the roommate info. Do you know if this building has elevators? It has 7 floors so I assume so. It has the most freshman-290. On the end is kind of nice. Maybe it will be quieter? I’m glad to hear you think the triples are bigger. I was kind of worried that they just converted a double to squeeze the freshman in.

Make sure your son adds himself to the Hank Ingram Facebook page. Maybe his roommates will reach out to him (that is if his roommate(s) received the housing package!). I have my fingers crossed for you that your son has only one roommate in a triple room! At least he is in one of the newer dorms. When we took the tour in April, we toured Hank House and my D really liked it. Turns out 2 of her classes are in Hank so that’s nice!

Thank you, yellow granite. He has two roommates and both are international students. One boy is from China and the other is from Saudi Arabia. The boy from China looks like he went to goading school in CT. They have been trying to reach him but his privacy settings were turned on. Thank you for mentioning Hank House FB page!

just registered for family weekend, already had hotel and flight set…can’t believe how close we all are!

my son is also in Gillette, his roommate connected with him via FB and they’ve already met. We went to an amazing send off party, met such friendly and bright alumni and families. So excited for my son. He just sent me this link. <a href=“Vanderbilt students are happiest in U.S., survey finds”>http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/education/2014/08/04/vanderbilt-students-are-happiest-in-us-survey-finds/13584391/

My S he’s not surprised that Vanderbilt has the happiest students. He says he’s happy he’s a VU student. He looking forward to heading back to Nashville this week.

@familykCT, don’t worry about the triple in Hank House. They are huge! As long as he gets along with his roommates, it will be fine.

And, yes, the dorms have elevators.

go2girl is also in Hank’s House–7th floor! How random that som many CC kids would end up in the same house!

Today a colleague poked her head in my door to mention she was moving her D back tomorrow as she is going to be an RA in Hank this year. She told me about the intensive training they have planned for these new RAs in areas like alcohol education, recognition of mental health issues, dealing with issues related to Greek LIfe (disappointment, decisions not to participate, etc.). I thought those of you who are sending freshmen might feel good to know that their RAs will spend over a week preparing for the class of '18.

Thank you! Son is relieved about the elevators. He thought they would just be for handicapped students. Although 4th floor isn’t bad. I lived on the 4th floor of historic building my freshman year. It still doesn’t have elevators and we all survived fine. Helped with the freshman 15.

I was an RA back in the day and we had pretty simple training. I definitely had some roller coaster RA issues to deal with. So glad that have such a good program for that. I’m sure the RA group is outstanding.

Just thought I will post this here for parents considering buying a laptop, printer. Bestbuy has $150 off some good laptops ( Mac Air, Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro etc) for college bound students ( and who have .edu email). Good reviews on the models available. Go to the post office get a 10% movers coupon and stack it on top off the $150 off. Sweet deal I think

FamilyKCT;

If you enter Hank Ingram on the ends of the dorm, rather than the main lobby, you will be on the third floor of the building. Therefore, your S will only take 1 flight of stairs to get to his room. The general rule of thumb when our D lived there was if you were on floors 5-7 you took the elevator, otherwise you used the stairs.

More good info. Does anyone know how strict move in times are? My son has a swearing in/promotion ceremony at the NROTC house at 9:00. His move in time is at 7:00 but the unit is doing marching exercises at that time. I guess I could move him in at 7:00 and be back in time for the ceremony.

I don’t think that move-in time is particularly strict. But move-in goes very quickly with the help of the move crew. Setting up takes some time, but all your stuff will be in the room within minutes of pulling the car up.

My take was the point of move in times is just to improve the flow of cars in and out of the Commons; if you show up earlier or later, it’s not a problem at all.

We had a 7am move in time last year and by 7:15am we were fully moved into the room. Not unpacked, but all the stuff was there. Note that if you are a 7am move in time, you are first, so getting to the staging area earlier would benefit you if you are short on time, because your car will be further up in line, and unloaded earlier in the process.

Thank you all. I think I’ll get to staging early and proceed from there. Will also check the weather for rain. That would be a bummer.

There will be so much excitement that day, rain would not be noticed. Its hard to not be pumped up when 200 upperclassman are lining the walks as you drive up the driveways to the unloading area at each dorm, all yelling “Go Dores,” “Welcome Home” and such. Everything will be out of your car and onto a dolly in five minutes or less, and whisked to your room.

S is moving into his dorm this morning with his dad’s help. I sure wish I could be there. I did get a skype session with them so they could show me the room. S was definitely spoiled with the closet size in Memorial last year. It looks like some of the clothes may need to come home. He and his roommate have decided to bunk the beds this year instead of lofting two beds like last year due to the room configuration. Each year is a new experience.
