thanks everybody, this information has been very helpful and interesting...food for thought.

Okay just one more question (I think!) How would anyone, hopefully current students, characterize the dating scene at Vandy? Is there one? Or is it mostly just hooking up?
Okay, actually one more (kind of catty) question: A girl from my school who now goes to Vandy just got in to AOPi, she's actually not my favorite person and she keeps telling me it is the best Sorority there and that if I go I should try to join. Can anyone tell me what it's reputation on campus is?

Personally, I think AOPi is middle of the pack but they have some pretty girls. The dating scene is strong (people take dates to football games) and will often go to dinner as a group. There is also a big drunken hook-up scene. I guess it depends what you are looking for.

Oh Goodie-- its the filming of "Not Another Legally Blondie Movie"

Keep in mind that 434 invitations were received by freshmen to join Panhellenic sororities this month.

I remember being flabbergasted by the number of women at Vanderbilt who were members of sororities.

Then I discovered that although they have houses no one lives in the houses besides the officers. The houses are used for meetings, socials, study areas, etc. One member who was a tour guide said she would use her sorority's kitchen to make cookies.

The sororities at Vanderbilt like many schools are social clubs and a good way to meet other students your freshman year. Vanderbilt also has delayed recruitment (the current term for rush) which gives women time to find out more about the Greek system.

Visit a freshman dorm after Bid Day and you will see photos, flowers, insignia, etc. on the doors to rooms. And most of the freshman women dorms are single rooms - small, but you have your own space.

As far as the sororities go - they each have their own pages on the Vanderbilt website:

aopi is definitely not the best sorority, but it's not the worst either. i think they have like 51 girls this year, which is pretty amazing.

as for the dating scene, there is one, but, like nymets said, there's also A LOT of drunken hooking up.

betterday, go to Webshots.com and type 'Vandy girls' to get an idea what the undergraduates look like.

Not even close to the girls at UT!

those girls on webshots are not representative...trust me.

So I search on webshots, and the first picture to come up has my friend from high school in it! BIZARRO!

Slipstream99 what do you mean the webshots girls are not representative? The Vandy girls or the UT girls? Do you mean they are prettier in real life? Or not as pretty as those?

what difference does it make either way?

jeez whodunnit, I was just wondering what he meant.

haha take it easy. i was just asking since you're a girl

As a girl, I am interested in who boys think are pretty. I have my own opinion about the girls on webshots (I couldn't resist looking) and I wanted to know what a boy would think.

i just meant those girls look more, i dont know, jersey, than the typical vandy girl

Hi I'm a freshmen girl at vandy (and i'm an aopi, but I'll admit it wasn't my first choice although I'm very happy now). The sorority stereotypes listed before are pretty accurate except that Kappa Delta is also very hard partying and also extremely New York oriented. Greek life is huge and I would recommend going through the process, although rush week (and pledging for guys) seriously sucks. But one recommendation for rush is don't get caught up in the stereotypes because it really will distract you from finding the place where you actually fit and will be comfortable spending 4 years with. The girls are very pretty in general and yes some are your typical blonde blue eyes, but not everyone. The dating scene varies a lot. I personally have a boyfriend so clearly there is some dating. A lot of people are in long distance relationships and a lot of other people do the random drunken hook ups. I am extremely happy here and can't imagine being anywhere else and as long as you are confident in who you are, you will probably have a great time here too! Hope that helped!

I thought rush was supposed to be a lot of fun?

The later rounds are fun. The earlier ones are exhausting. It's also just really stressful, but it is definitely worth it.

Can someone provide brief descriptions of the different fraternities, their reputations, and details about what someone has to do to be accepted? Also, how much does it cost per year to be a frat member, including dues and the costs of different activities? Does everyone who wants to join a fraternity succeed in joining somewhere, even if it isn't one's first choice?
