Vanderbilt Student's Transfer Chances

Not an expert in transfers, but I’m curious why you are transferring? DS is lookling at Vandy & Duke so I’d like to know if you can share. Did you originally apply to Duke as well?

^ I did orginally apply to Duke, however, I was rejected. I don’t really find Vandy as academically stimulating as I had hoped for. I do enjoy the social scene at Vandy though. I think Duke might be the perfect combination of a social scene that is similar to Vandys, with the academic atmosphere that I seek.

any other thoughts? anyone?

Transfer2013 - you might want to look at some older posts that will help answer your question - see below.

I don’t know if you will find classes at Duke any more stimulating than Vandy as my student has been disappointed with the quality of teaching by many professors at Duke. If you are thinking professors have dinners and invite students to their homes - that has only happened once for my student.

You also won’t find the restaurants and stores around the Duke campus that you find around the Vandy campus. If you are into the Greek scene sororities and fraternities do not have houses on the Duke campus like they do at Vanderbilt.

Student services at Vandy are far more enhanced than they are at Duke. Ask students at Duke what they think of Residential Housing administration. Also, you should visit Duke and compare the staff you meet. How friendly are the staff, students, etc. at Duke vs. Vandy.

You should also consider that crime at and around Duke is more frequent than that of Vanderbilt. There have been two on campus robberies involving handguns during the fall semester. See Duke police website: [Duke Police: News Archive](http://www.duke.edu/police/news_stats/past_news/index.php)

I checked Vandy’s website and the crime report is very tame compared to that of Duke’s. You might want to compare the surrounding environment you find at Vandy vs. that you will find at Duke.

Good luck in your decision whatever it may be. Just remember there is more to college than the social scene and academics.

singersmom,
I can’t help but notice how negative you are about Duke. First off, Duke’s Greek life is right on campus, the heart of West Campus specifically. They do not have individual Frat and Sorority houses but they do have quads designated to the greek establishments. This makes them very open which any Duke student will attest to and flexible. Also, as an incoming freshman with a few friends already at Duke, they are very pleased with the academic rigor and teaching of the professors. Also, a dorm room is never luxurious and they seem to be pleased with their living arrangements.

Why are you such a Negative Nancy?
I can’t wait to be a Blue Devil!

hey DukeRM!, any Mom who might be paying $52,000/year for Duke has right to voice ther concerns, especially if there has been TWO ARMED ROBBERIES on campus!

^^ Its not as bad as some other schools, like JHU and Emory. My friend goes to Emory and he told me that 2 Emory students were robbed at gunpoint in his first semester (he is a freshman).

Any comment on my chances? I looked through the links I was provided, and it seems like I have no chance at a Duke transfer.

College Checker - absolutely correct. Remember when the Yale grad student was murdered in 2009 and how closed circuit cameras helped the on and off campus security? Not at Duke! My student had not heard about the sexual assault and robbery until I expressed my concern.

Oh and DukeRM just wait until you have to call Campus police because the fraternity in your quad has been playing their music at ear piercing levels until 4AM in the morning on a weekday. And my student is a Greek, but even they have gotten fed up with the thoughtlessness of some of the fraternities.

What has been Duke Administration’s reaction to the robbery of two female undergrad students. One student was also sexually assaulted. Any university that is so ho hum about crime targeting students no longer has my respect. Their attitude is even touted in the Nov/Dec Duke Magazine with the headline “Crime Happens.” [Crime Happens by Bridget Booher-November/December 2008](<a href=“Duke Mag”>Duke Mag) Tell that to these two female students and their parents.

And in case no one knows where Wannamaker and Chapel drives are - just think about the busy big circle at the entrance known as the Chapel Drive traffic circle. Wannamaker goes down to the Edens Quad.

Student reports robbery, sexual assault
November 30, 2009
Duke Police are investigating an alleged robbery and sexual assault that took place two weeks ago near Wannamaker and Chapel drives on West Campus.

A female Duke student said she was approached by a man around 10 p.m. Nov. 16. She said the suspect took cash, the student’s DukeCard and committed a second-degree sexual offense. The suspect was described as a black male, 5-feet-11-inches tall and 28 to 30 years old.

The student submitted an anonymous report on Nov. 23 to another campus office, who then shared the report with Duke Police.

Upon being notified, DUPD immediately began an investigation, although the lapse of time and anonymous report will make it harder to identify the suspect, said Assistant Chief Gloria Graham.

“If someone reports a crime at 3 a.m., an investigator would be called and we’d start work right then,” Graham said. “In this instance, we weren’t able to process the crime scene by setting up a perimeter and conducting a search, which greatly increases the probability of solving the crime.”

Graham said that reports can also be made anonymously to Duke Police through its “Silent Witness” program on the Duke Police website.

Anyone with any information about the alleged robbery and sexual assault on Nov. 16 is asked to contact Duke Police at 684-2444.

Armed Robbery Reported on Campus Drive
September 22, 2009
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, at approximately 9:45 p.m., an armed robbery was reported by a student walking along Campus Drive near the East Campus Steam Plant. The suspect was a passenger in a dark four-door car that pulled over. The suspect revealed a handgun and demanded the student’s bookbag. The student was not injured, and the car was last seen driving on Campus Drive heading away from East Campus.

The suspect was described as a bald black male in his 30s, of medium to dark complexion with a large build. He was described as wearing a dark baggy sweat shirt and dark pants.

If you have any information related to this incident, please contact the Duke University Police Department at 684-2444.

Transfer2013 - if you really want to change schools apply to the ones that appeal to you. If Duke is one of those schools go for it. You might get lucky - all it takes to apply is your time and only you can make that decision.

My apologies for hijacking your thread with the crime at Duke - but as you can see Duke had two armed robberies ON CAMPUS in one semester also and it was female students who were targeted. Good luck to you in your search for a new university.

Meh, that’s one person. By my first semester freshman year, I was invites over to two of my professors’ places for dinner.

OP, I suggest giving it a shot. Transfers are really a crapshoot and the fuzzies are a lot more important IMO.
