VANDERBILT- tranfer 09-10 students!!! If your attending vandy already help me/us out!

Hey so I'm applying to vandy this next fall as a transfer. I will be done with my freshmen year of college, I attend Lipscomb University right now.

(i know this is alot to read :P but i had to list all that i could think of)

I spoke with the admissions counselor (at vandy my counselor- regional) and she said that in transfer admissions the college GPA will be the most important deciding factor in transfer admissions, but other stuff is still important. so high GPAs everyone! Right now im finishing up my exams and If I keep doing like I have been through these exams so far. I will have a 3.59 GPA you guys think that is good enough, assuming I write good essays?
my major is biochem, minor is kinda undecided but will probably be biology or maybe something like math or physics or....maybe even art

gpa~ 3.59
17 hour course load upon first semester: gen chem, intro to psychology, calc I, seminar class, and a bible course (seminar and bible are required courses by lipscomb.... booo but i got an A i think in both)

Im pretty involved as well:

I was personally invited by the Dean of the arts and sciences to be a part of the "Dean's student advisory committee"- where we meet once a month exclusively with the Dean and converse about how to improve the lipscomb community and better the university and make it more attractive for future generations.
American chemistry society chapter at Lipscomb University member
I Volunteer at Kilowatt ours, nashville based pro-green non profit organization
Started My own Lipscomb Jam sessions "Club" where we just get together and jam (the only informal musicians organization at lipscomb too)
I did chemistry tutoring to other students(high school and college students) as well.
I was in the campgne with "TIRRC" to register 1500 eligible immigrants and I recieved an award for my contribution and together we registered around 1800 voters.
I was in the IB diploma program in High School. through which I completed 150 hours of "Service, Creativity, and Action" activities. along with 12 varying projects related to the specific class they were in (2 per class) i took 6 classes. I also wrote an extended essay, im sorry if im typing this and you all already know what IB is lol, but a 4000 word extended essay on Hitler and his propaganda usage specifically against the German youth and only the printed form of propaganda utilized.
I worked with the Oasis center volunteering at elementary schools and teaching them about various cultures and my culture (im not white..lol).
only 26 on ACT : ( but this was like sophmore year and it doesn't look good none of the less. Im thinking about retaking it but im not sure if i have enough time. deadline for transfer apps is March 1st i think.
Played Varsity Tennis in High School, and football.
Was invovled with the thesbian society, i was a part of the "work crew" and was involved in the production of school sponsored live plays.
high school gpa was low, i was stupid sophmore year: 2.7
Held a workshop at "TIRRC"s annual convention for involved youth to show them how to tackle subjects such as discrimination and racism by utilizing media tools.
I have self taught myself guitar, harmonica, and I am still learning piano (self teaching it). Im also teaching others guitar right now, without pay which is good because most guitar teachers charge about 25-35$ a lesson lasting only like 35mins to 45mins.
ohh ohh ohh also I can draw! i've been teaching myself since like 6th grade and i've got countlesssss sketchs and doodles of nothing random stuff but things i was inspired by under my bed or in my closet or behind my guitar somewhere...yeah when im motivated i can teach myself pretty much anything lmao yay!

im sure im forgeting something but using this someone tell me what they think my "chances" are if all of the above hold true (well the GPA really thats the only thing that can change and if it does it willl be to like a 3.41 which would **** me offfff)

also any tips on writing a good transfer college essay!? anything would be helpful guys!

but THANKSSS!!

2.7 HS GPA, 26 ACT, applying as a sophomore transfer to Vandy? Seems like quite a stretch.

Give it another year and bring your GPA up to a 3.6 and it should be a lot easier.

but I do have a 3.6 gpa (college gpa from first semester). i guess you must have mis-read that part. but with a 3.6 and the other stuff i listed how difficult do you think it might be?

also are you a student there by any chance? just curious, if so you were accepted what were your stats and how were your Extra ciriculars and essays?

I agree with BasementCat. Seems like a stretch with just one semester of grades.

talha, it may be a stretch, but that shouldn’t stop you from applying. You never know what could happen! But, I am also applying as a sophomore transfer to Vandy for the Fall of 2010. Chance me please??

HS GPA: 3.91 unweighted, 4.0 weighted
ACT: 30 (Should I retake the ACT??)
HS Extracurriculars: Band (first chair trumpet), Cross Country, Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout), National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club.
First Semester College GPA: 3.75 (I took two honors courses).
Major: Pre-med / Chemistry
College Extracurriculars: Alpha Epsilon Delta (Pre-health honor society - pledge member) and I volunteer once a week at an inner city elementary school clinic.
Transferring from: University of Tennessee

Please chance me? I was flat out denied when I applied regular decision during my senior year in high school, but Vandy is still my #1 choice!

is it really a stretch? i thought a 3.588 college gpa would be a pretty decent plus for me
: <br>
I emailed my regional advisor at vandy and she said that my college gpa would be the most important thing in my decision making for a yes or a no in acceptance. plus the transfer rate for 08-09 was 56% acceptance and 09-10 was 51% which I DDEEAARRRRLLLYY hope stays the same for 10-11 year : )))

but your chances seem good to me gunther. do you have any more ECs for your college career? your ACT seems right up there and If I were you I’d probably take it again just to see if I can get a higher score but really it doesn’t matter its still a good score. (ps im taking the ACT again because well i took my ACT during the worst school year I had ever had so haha hopefully I will break the 30 mark)

your hs and college gpa is good, the only thing I would look at more would be the ECs ,I say during this upcoming semester do A BUNCH more of ECs. I’ve always been doing poop loads of ECs because i like em, I did a workshop for emerging youth leaders on the DAY of my Calc exam this year and I still got an A on the exam haha score!

Sorry, that was an error on my part–I meant to say “maintain your 3.6.” And I’ll agree with Gunther that there’s no harm in applying, other than your time and the fee. But I don’t think your odds will be all that good until you have more hours under your belt–that’ll prove that it’s not just a fluke.

i’m also applying to Vandy as a sophomore transfer.

first semester at a school I really don’t like. 4.0 GPA(20 credits)
But not much ECs:[

chance me please? anyone?

How well do ya guys think my chances would increase with at least a 3.6 with another 17 or 19 credits from the second semester of my freshmen year?

And springbrother I think if you keep your GPA maintained for the next semester and rack up some good ECs you should be fine.

Because you’re a first yr transfer theyre gonna weigh your hs stats heavily. i would stick it out one more yr, get some good ec’s and bring your gpa up past a 3.6 if possible. There is no hurt in applyin tho so you might as well. good luck with it. Im applyin there as well

Your college GPA will matter more than your high school GPA but if you have a a 3.6 with only 17 or so credits that might not be enough to forget the high school grades.

Apply, but if you don’t get in keep working hard and applying again next year. I guarantee the second time around you’ll have a better shot.
