Vanderbilt Transfer Thread [Fall 2017]

@pearmetty What was your ACT/SAT score? Your GPAs are fantastic, though. If you have a competitive ACT, I don’t see why you’d get rejected.

@watermychances Im taking 20 credits this semester, 19 credits last semester, all A’s on the mid term report and I have a fair amount of AP credit maybe like 18 credits. I have no idea about transfer process how many credits I need to have coming in or anything. I appreciate the feedback and any more information about transfer process I really am happy to receive.

@friendfriendly “who are you? do you work in admissions? schools are just so competitive now, we can’t just go assuming willy-nilly that everyone can just get in… its not like it was thirty years ago, or even last year…”

Can’t that be turned around on you? You’re the one who came in with “honestly no chance”. If you don’t work in admissions, we can’t just go willy-nilly saying someone with a 3.96 will be rejected. I’m being tongue in cheek, but I hope you see my point.

@friendfriendly No I don’t work in admissions, but neither do you. I’ve been on CC for a while now and at least have the experience looking through hundreds of threads of different profiles and admissions threads and thats where I drew my knowledge upon. Telling somebody with a 3.98 College GPA (especially as a mechanical engineering major) they have “no chance” is extremely inaccurate.

@limitsbylaw 2200 SAT 1440 math and cr which is a little low. I have 3 subject tests over 740 which is okay.

@pearmetty I’m really really liking your chances

Might you guys be able to chance me?

College: top 25 LAC (according to Forbes), but top 40 according to U.S. News
Prospective Sophomore
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.93
ECs: Investment Club, Men’s Club Rugby, Alternative theater troupe, Social Business Venture Fund
ACT: 32
HS: 3.15
^Few Notes:

  1. I went to a nationally-ranked private school with a grade deflation problem (average Vanderbilt admitted GPA from my high school was something like a 3.5; plus, I was admitted to my current college ED which has an average enrolled student ACT of 30 and median GPA of 3.6)
  2. I took a bunch of honors courses (that weren’t weighted, unfortunately)
  3. My grades dropped in high school from freshman year to sophomore year, but they’ve been steadily rising since then, with a big jump my first semester of college

Recs: very solid, professors I asked seemed genuinely saddened by my news and offered to talk to me if I wanted (got As in both their classes and participated a lot).

Essays: superb, went through a number of drafts on each of them and more or less poured my soul into the words

Other: I was awarded a scholarship to do paid research over the summer with an economics professor at my college. Our research focus is designing a social business investment model for education based on cases in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

I was rejected by Michigan (before the research position was offered to me), so I’m wondering if I still have a chance at Vandy, or if that news is a good indicator that I do not.

Does being in a top 20 LAC make up for rather low ACT? I only have a 32.

@SunZhaoyu Looking back at past years’ forums, I think Vanderbilt’s ACT standard is more forgiving for transfer students; I’m pretty sure I saw a few people getting in with 28/29 ACTs. Obviously, a 25 is still typically not going to cut it, but I think a 32 is close enough where it’s acceptable.

@SunZhaoyu What year are you?, I would hardly say that a 32 is a low ACT score (lol the stuff I read on CC).

Chance me pleaz

Comp Sci major, prospective sophomore student from top 40 private college according to US News. (In Top 10 hardest schools to get As in class. Idk if the college will consider this…)

First semester: 3.92
Mid-term: 4.0

EC: Entrepreneur club, Founder of Chess club, consecutive winner of national spanish exam,
Radio Production club, Selective Hacker club in the school, Video production club, Undergraduate Teaching Assistance in Physics (appointed personally by one of my professors)

Highschool GPA: 3.5 (went to a rough private school.)
SAT: writing 750, Reading 690, Math 790

SAT II:
Math II : 800
Physics : 790
Chemistry: 800

Essay: put my soul into it. I have no regrets.
Recs: They should be okay, since both profs liked me alot

I am pretty dam desperate at this point. I will cry my hearts out if I get into vandy.

If 32 is low then I’m gonna be pretty screwed with a 30 ACT lol, but I am applying as a junior transfer.

@limitsbylaw I am just very concerned because 32 is Vandy’s lower 25% bar… Hopefully I can get in
@Mastodon97 I am applying as a rising sophomore!

I guess if we are re-doing chance me’s could someone chance me b/c I didn’t get any responses last time:

Applying into school of Arts and Sciences (hopefully Neuroscience eventually). I’m currently in my 4th quarter of my first year (did a full summer quarter) at a top 75 National University. I’ve done all my Chem requirements, my writing requirements and by the end of this year I will be done with all of my bio requirements and all my calc requirements. I also have like 12 AP creds.

College GPA: 4.0-Probably my strongest area. (A’s/A+'s in 3 chem classes, 2 chem labs, 1 bio class, 1 calc class, 1 psych class, 1 environmental science class, 1 writing class)

Highschool GPA: Very low
UW: 3.3
W:3.5.
My highschool GPA was brought down by a stomach issue that persisted throughout my junior and senior years (I had stomach ulcers that were misdiagnosed- I wrote more in detail about in in my additional info section).

Test Scores: A little on the low side
ACT: 31
SAT: 2100

Extracurriculars: Nothing spectacular, but I definitely did/do things outside of school
HS: Varsity Soccer/Baseball. Model UN, Habitat for Humanity
College: Intramural Sports, Pre-Med Club, Chemistry Club

2 Good Letters of rec and hopefully 2 good CA essays and a good supplement.

@limitsbylaw thank you very much mate. I appreciate it a lot

@inordie you have a seriously good application mate. i wish I could TA in physics or code lol.

@pearmetty Would you mind chancing me?

@limitsbylaw

You certainly go to a better school than I go to being in a top 40 liberal arts school so you got that going for you definitely. Although HS gpa is a bit low, coming from a top tier private school more than explains your situation. (I went to a noncompetitive public school) I’m not sure what you wrote on your essay, but if I were in your position I would have highlighted your interest in human & organization development as it sets you apart from many other econ majors applying as well. Your college gpa obviously shows you’re more than competent enough to handle Vanderbilt. You really do have a good chance with your dual interest in majors and I hope we get into Vandy mate.

@pearmetty I forgot to change that; it’s a tad dated. I’ve started to lean more towards a double major in economics and theatre (I wrote my Vandy supplement on the alternative theater group I’m a part of on campus).

As for the chancing, I appreciate you taking the time. I really really hope that this works out for the both of us.

Hey guys, I think at this point a better use of this thread would be talking about decisions. When you get your decision please post it with your stats and the decision you got, and maybe make a little notes of when the first decision came out and what number wave you are, so that future thread lurkers will be able to easily find information. Can we agree ? haha I wish past threads did that

@somehmonggirl That’s a good idea, I’ll do that and encourage others to do the same.
