@superpinksquish Would you be a sophomore or junior if/when admitted? The 31 credit hours, first year, with an AA is confusing me
@mjr2013 I would be a sophomore, I am currently working on my Associate in Arts, I may take more classes next summer but I am transferring before I receive my AA.
I also took SAT II tests for Math I, Biology E/M, and Literature, but they are not superb scores.
I see.
I don’t hate your odds. The test score will be considered because you’re a sophomore, but it’s not like your HS GPA was terrible by any means. Definitely worth applying. Best of luck!
Hey guys, I would love for someone to chance me. My main downside is my ACT which I am planning to retake. I really want to transfer to Vanderbilt more than anything else. I am a freshman as of now.
HS Stats:
27 ACT (aiming for 33)
GPA 3.75 and 4.01
Coarse load: 6 AP classes and multiple Honors.
ECs: about 7 of them including president of HOSA, member of National Honor Society, Chess- Regional Champion, Golf 3 years was in the Regional tournament and some other stuff.
Job: I have to work to afford college and I don’t have to much time for other ECs which I listed in my personal essay. Manager at White Castle. Included my Resume in the common app.
College: 4.0 GPA at MTSU last semester with 15 cred, this semester I am enrolled in the HONORS college and plan to keep the same GPA. As I said I haven’t had much time, I don’t live on campus and I commute to college. I wrote my entire situation in my personal essay. I live in Nashville also.
I really have wanted to go to Vanderbilt since I was a kid. Vanderbilt has meant so much to me and I am willing to give up many things for Vanderbilt. I plan to submit my application soon. Plan to keep everyone updated.
@Vandy2k17 Did you apply as a freshman? Keep in mind they will be looking almost exclusively at your high school stats, as you only have the 15 CHs to your name at MTSU.
With that said, your high school stats are solid. Reinforced by that solid semester at MTSU, I don’t hate your odds.
Re: ACT, don’t obsess over it. The further out from HS you get the less it means. If you think you could improve it, you could take it one more time, but I wouldn’t take it any more than that, regardless of whether you got into Vandy or not. Also, a six point jump is pretty significant. Unless the 27 was a result of one test in which you weren’t entirely focused, or used your time poorly and didn’t answer every question, a 33 may be unrealistic.
Best of luck!
I would have to agree with @mjr2013 , the higher up you get on the ACT score range, the harder it is to get “that extra point”. Bridging the gap between a 27 and a 33 is a lot of work.
With that said, you should definitely still apply. Your interest for Vanderbilt is clear as day and if you show specific reasoning behind your decision to transfer there, you’ll have a chance.
I was rejected ED as freshman, but I failed to show interesr and my gpa was lower at that time as well. I feel like my stats are much higher this year and i plan to get good teacher recs also (ignore my grammar I’m on my cell phone). I showed how important vandy is for me in my common app and I am taking the ACT again this feb hoping for above a 30 honestly. I made it clear that Vandy is the only college I am applying to as well. I really hope I see all of y’all fall 2017.
Hey guys, I transferred to Vandy last year as an economics and history major. Hit me up if you have any questions.
Hey you could see my stats above and I’m applying to Vandy this year as economics major. I really hope to UP my ACT and keep my GPA at a 4 this semester, can you give me any help. I REALLLLY want to go to Vandy and I expressed it very well on my application. That is the only college I want to go to and applied to.
Hey guys just an update on my part! I just officially finished submitting my application (including additional materials such as transcript/recs/etc) on MyAppVU today! Hopefully in the first wave of decisions
Hello everyone! Could anyone chance me? Thanks in advance and I wish the best of luck to everyone! I’m 24 years old and I’m currently enrolled at a community college. I will be earning my A.S. in University Studies in May.

Hmm yeah my first act score is low as well but other than that HS GPA I’m sure you have a good chance. Hope to see yah this year
@sixone the further from HS you are, the less HS GPA is going to matter. Same with ACT, as a transfer student they will look at those things a lot less than as an incoming freshman.
Man I’m really nervous. I am retaking my ACT this Feb and have been studying quite a bit. I think almost everything else is good except my ACT score. I’m still going to apply as this is the only school I want to go to. Good luck to you btw .
@Vandy2k17 , I do encourage you to apply to at least 3-4 more colleges. I know it’s easy to be enamored with Vanderbilt, the lush green campus in a great location, I really do get it, but it’s never wise to apply to just one college.
My first round of admissions was a cruel wake up call to how this game works. LIke you, I had a top college. Did an interview, sent a letter, made my interest as clear as day with a fantastic essay. Grades were O.K, nothing out of this world, but I wasn’t applying to some top 10. I liked the college because at the time it had everything I was searching for.
Rejected. Along with all the other 3 colleges I applied to.
In hindsight my biggest error was not applying to more. I’m applying to eleven colleges this time around, and have since learned from that mistake. Now with grades from an American college, good ACT and subject test scores, I’m sure I’ll have a better chance this time.
yeah I suppose you’re right. I am going to apply to NYU and USC I think I may have better chances with those colleges rather than Vanderbilt also. What are your opinions?
@Vandy2k17 Can you afford NYU? Unlike Vandy, NYU is very stingy with its financial aid and will -not- cover all of your expenses. Look into other “meet full need” schools if money is an issue.
Speaking of stingy NYU, My EFC freshman year was literally 0 and I got into NYU RD, the only aid offered to me was a little more than 5k in Pell grant and then around 65k in LOANS a YEAR
Yea, NYU is only for rich people. Like Adam Sandler
Way I see it is you don’t wana be in these two situations
1.getting into all schools you apply to(you will wish you reached higher)(exception if one of the schools is Harvard or Yale, or other super prestigious schools)
2.getting into none(obivious reasons)
so pick schools that will make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
