What don’t you like about Clemson
The community is too large and just not quite right for me. Vanderbilt’s campus and community has a much better feel, and I think the people there are much better to be around. It’s also just a school with better classes and more involved teachers. I’m sure Clemson is great for a lot of people but it’s really not suited for me. Only went here because of money and because it was close to home.
Hey guys! What do you think my chances are for getting in for this coming Fall?
My stats:
Gender: female
Current school: University of Pittsburgh
Applying as: rising sophomore
Intended major: economics and political science
High school GPA: 4.1 weighted
College GPA: 3.7
ACT Score: 32
Credits: 54 by end of this year
Hooks: Interned for my congressman, getting an additional letter of rec from him, Girl Scout gold award recipient, Dean’s List
EC’s: Best Buddies for past 5 years including volunteering weekly at a local school for disabled kids, I currently have a paid position as a campaign coordinator for a guy running for Pennsylvania house of representatives, I write and edit for a student run media site on campus, I host the only country music radio show on my campus. I am also a Girl Scout gold award recipient as mentioned above which is the girl equivalent to Eagle Scout.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I’m head over heels for Vandy. Also, just wanted to note that I tailored my common app essay to Vandy specifically. Not sure if that has any affect, but I think it conveyed just how much I want to be there next year.
@clemsontovandy I’m in the same situation. Big school close to home to save money since I had no idea where I wanted to be. I was a West Point kid until I got medically disqualified, so I figured I’d use my freshman year to actually look. And then I found Vandy and that was it. Best of luck on admission! Looking at your stats I’d say you have nothing to be worried about.
@clemsontovandy
I’d honestly be very surprised if you weren’t accepted. Your stats + hooks are pretty rare and always in-demand. If your heart’s set on Vandy that’s great - if your essays and recs are well done and your app matches up with your post, you’ll probably get some good news this spring. However, depending on how compelling your story is and how far you want to go from home, you could also consider taking some shots at other top schools (i.e. ivies, even the ones that take very few transfers).
@M_Reynolds
Stats seem to be generally in-line with recent transfer classes (although that’s anecdotal and not objectively data-driven). ECs seem compelling. I’d definitely say you have a reasonable chance; just make sure your recs/essays are the best they can be.
Reposting my stats again since more people are viewing the threat at this time:
Current college: Ohio State University
Applying as: Enrolling as a rising sophomore
Major: Biology
School Applying Into: Peabody (HOD or Educational Studies Major)
Credit Hours: 29 (14 first semester and 15 second semester)
High School GPA: 4.0
ACT Scores: 31
College GPA: 3.285 (Not so good, however I only took three classes first semester so two Bs and an A)
Recs: I go to the third largest school in the nation, so they won’t be stellar. I am thinking of adding a peer rec from one of my best friends who goes to Vandy.
Essay: Pretty good, I’ve been working on it for a couple of months. Its about how I want to downsize and go into education instead of a STEM/pre-med field.
Hooks: I’ve been in contact with my admissions rep since the end of my senior year. I’ve been continuously expressing
my interest in transferring, and I even went as far as to fly to Nashville for MLK weekend in order to meet with her. I expressed my interest into applying to Peabody, and she seemed very impressed by my communication and drive.
US/Intl: US
ECs:
(High school ECs were pretty good, slightly above average I’d say but not too over the top)
-Libertarian club member/board member
-Future Health Professionals Learning Community (application based)
-Ohio Welcome Leader (move-in crew/volunteer group and application based)
-Residence Hall Programming Board (volunteer committee member)
-I am heavily involved/leading a Undergraduate Student Government campaign (Campus has 50,000+ people so its a large campaign)
Also, is Peabody difficult to transfer into? I know they were more lenient on freshman admissions.
If any past transfers could give me some advice, I’d appreciate it.
Hi everyone! This is my first time posting to one of these forums and it was really helpful to read them last year! I’m not sure of my chances to be honest. Vanderbilt was my top choice last year but sadly I didn’t get in and went to my third choice b/c the second didn’t offer as much merit money.
So here are my stats so far:
Current College: Tulane University
Applying as: Rising Sophomore
Intended Major: Undecided, but I want to do Journalism with pre-med
High School GPA: 3.7 UW, I took six AP classes and scored four 5’s and two 4’s.
College GPA: 3.5 (It sucks, i know but i took challenging courses)
ACT Score: 33
Credits: 50 (Came in with 16 from AP, 3 from summer program in Switzerland for ecology, 16 first semester and 15 second (i would’ve at 18 but had to drop one class b/c of workload)
I would say one of my hooks is that I now specifically want to go to Vanderbilt because they offer an undergraduate degree in medical journalism (it’s called Communication in Technology and Sciences). It’s a subject I’m very passionate about and want to do as a career. Every other school I’ve looked at either offers it as a Master’s Program.
ECs: Photo Editor for HS paper, staff writer/photographer for local paper (editor is writing one of my optional letters), intern at local magazine, hospital volunteer, Photo Associate Editor at my college paper, equestrian team, women in science club, summer program in Switzerland for ecology, staff photographer for Voodoo Music Festival (was 10 feet away from Post Malone lol) and currently preparing for a HOSA comp in march
@Natedagrate13 You’re stats look decent. Make sure that your essays are killer though. They definitely like it when applicants express overwhelming interest in the school, so that will help. I’m coming from a big school (Pitt) too so I understand the letters of rec situation…it sucks. You look pretty involved on campus currently so that’s also really good. Best of luck!
@CatFenn Your stats look great. It actually helps that you applied previously too. Your ACT puts you right in the average for incoming freshman, which is really all we have to compare with. My admissions rep said don’t be overly worried about GPA, as long as its above a 3.3ish, though obviously the higher the better, but if you are taking challenging classes that also explains it. 3.5 is nothing to be worried about. Basically, as long as your essays convey that Vandy is the only school with the program you are looking for and your EC’s that deal with your major and future career I think you will be totally fine! Also, keep in mind that Vandy AXLE credits don’t count AP scores for credit, just a heads up to everyone! Some will count, but likely you will still have to take a science class again even if you got a 5 on AP bio. Good luck on the admissions process!
@M_Reynolds
Thanks for the reply! Should I be worried about my GPA? I’m taking challenging weed out classes here, and I’m part of the Honors program. What are your thoughts on this?
@Natedagrate13 That’s a tough question to answer. Indeed, Peabody, having fewer applicants, accepts more people into the college as freshmen. However, it’s one of the most popular majors on campus, so admissions may be less inclined to bring more students into a program that has plenty of people already versus one that is lacking in numbers. I wouldn’t let that factor into your decision, though; the effect is probably marginal, and if you are genuinely interested in the program, Peabody will recognize that.
Thanks @M_Reynolds !! And yeah i understand about AP, I just took intro to cell bio last semester b/c tulane didn’t take that credit since i’m pre-med.
My stats:

ECs: Interned for 2 senators in DC in junior year and senior year, in a sorority, club field hockey, was captain of squash team senior year, paid brand ambassador on campus, honors college, full tuition scholarship, in competitive and distinctive honors program separate from honors college.

HS: Internship with major marketing firm, Head of Newspaper, Marching Band, Internship w/ Congressman, NHS, Tour Guide, Various volunteerships
Do I have a shot at poly sci major?
@TerrierNation why do you think it is a longshot? I think your College GPA is very good and your ACT is decent (maybe a bit improvable). You have very good extra curriculars(I believe that the variety of interests somebody shows is something colleges really appreciate, but that is a very personal reflection). I don’t know how your HS GPA is counted, but you seem to have a shot
@TerrierNation I got in with similar stats. Don’t count yourself out so quickly.
Hi, I am very nervous about applying as a transfer because I got rejected as a first time freshmen. I would love any feedback whatsoever!! please don’t feel bad about being honest.
Current college: large state university
standing: freshman
major: sociology (premed)
minor: science
curent gpa: 4.0
high school gpa: 3.8something
ACT score: 31
EC: in high school, I was in about 8 with 1 leadership position. Right now, 4 clubs (astronomy, snma, ministry, premed), no leadership positions. I also volunteer regularly with 2 organizations (church and hospital).
AP: took 10 classes and 7 tests in high school. Made a 3 on one test and 4s and 5s on the other six.
Recommendations: to be honest, I don’t know any of my professors that well after only one semester and I could probably get a decent one, but it would not be particularly good.
I am an immigrant, but from a middle eastern country, so technically I’m white. Not a first gen student.
I am having a mental crisis trying to decide if applying is worth it. Please anyone, feedback would be really appreciated
When can we expect decisions? Not looking forward to stressing out for 3 months
@TerrierNation I believe they will send them out between mid-April and May… What are you applying for? Where are you from?
