Vanderbilt Transfer Thread [Fall 2018]

@TheLastofUs9 Thanks. Applying for political science from Boston University. How about you?

Biology and Philosophy pre-med from Seton Hall… what don’t you like at BU?

Hey everyone! So I hate to be that guy but be completely honest- do you think I have a shot at getting accepted as a transfer? Vanderbilt was my absolute top choice but I never ended up making it off the waitlist- I haven’t been able to forget about Vandy though; I’m determined to get the opportunity to attend next year!

Essay: it’s difficult to judge ourselves accurately, but I worked my butt off on both the common app and Vanderbilt specific essay and I am proud the final products.

Let me know if you think I could realistically get in or not. Sooo nervous for decisions to come out! Hopefully we’ll all be future classmates

F*** em 'up F*** 'em up BC SUCKS! You guys couldn’t make it out of the first round of the beanpot this year lol

How much would it hurt to apply with 35 credits (with AP) but only one college semester do to a family emergency as a second semester freshman/sophomore?

Hey guys, just submitted my application. What are my chances?

Current college: Emory University

Essays: I think they’re great, I spent a ton of time on them.

What do you guys think? I’m really hoping I get in. Vandy was my first choice last year and is still my first choice now.

current school: university of minnesota
rising sophomore
intended majors: philosophy/classics
high school gpa: 4.0 weighted, which is actually just a bit above average at the school i went to. we didnt have unweighted gpas, but if we did mine would have been about a 3.3. my high school grades were very erratic with a general downward trend. the school is fairly well known in tennessee, so that might help.
college gpa: 4.0
SAT: 1570 (790 Math, 780 Reading/Writing)
credits: i started in the summer so by the end of this semester i should have 41 credits from UMN. i also have some credits from 3 ap courses i took.
gender: male
ethnicity: caucasian
not applying for financial aid (i dont think vandy is need aware for transfers, i know some schools like brown are)
recs: one from a high school teacher, one from a professor. neither is finished currently, so im getting a bit anxious. i think they should be fine assuming they get completed. my high school teacher seemed to think highly of me even though he felt i was a slacker. my college professor seemed impressed that i was taking her course since it’s upper-division and we’re reading ulysses. that might help, esp. since i got an A on my first paper with her.

i dont think i have have any hooks. my uncle went to vanderbilt briefly but transferred before graduating. i have taken a fairly rigorous schedule and by the end of this year i will have taken 4 3000 level courses.

ECs: not much. I play guitar a lot, but I don’t have any positions to show for it. I still put it down since it’s one of my favorite things to do. Also in philosophy club and worked as a camp counselor one summer and as an assistant horseback instructor. im starting a volunteer position soon at a music venue, not sure if should put that down.

vanderbilt is probably my best bet since they admit so many transfers and seem to value stats more than other schools (at least for freshman admissions). id be disappointed if i didnt get in since im pretty miserable where i am now. also applying to washu and northwestern.

current uni: university of minnesota
applying as: rising sophomore
intended majors: philosophy/classics
credits: after this semester i will have 41 credits from minnesota. i started in the summer. another 16 from APs (not sure how i only took 3 APs).
hs GPA: 4.0 weighted, but this translated to about a 3.3 unweighted (i went to a competitive HS that didnt rank or provide unweighted gpas). also have a major drop in gpa after 3 semesters in the top 3% or so of my class. evened out a bit my senior year.
college GPA: 4.0
SAT: 1570 (never took the act)
ethnicity: white
gender: male
not applying for FA (i dont think vanderbilt is need aware for domestic transfers, though)

ECs: not much. i play guitar a lot, but i dont have any awards or positions to show for it. still put it down since it’s my favorite thing to do. in philosophy club and worked as a camp counselor one summer. about to start volunteering at a music venue.

LOR: one from high school english teacher. he thought i was kinda an eccentric slacker, but he could tell i enjoyed literature and thought i was smart. other is from a college professor; she seemed impressed that i was taking her class as a freshman since it’s upper-divsion and we read ulysses. neither is finished currently, so im getting a bit anxious.

essays: gee idk. people tell me im a good writer, but i feel like everyone gets told that.

hooks: none. my uncle went to vanderbilt for a year before transferring, but i doubt that counts for much.

really hoping i can get in. im pretty miserable now.

@transfer0096 why aren’t you more involved on campus? I believe that could play against you. also, if possible, try getting another rec letter from a college professor, it could really help with your application.

@TheLastofUs9
i just havent found much of interest or ive been rejected for whatever i applied for. i tried to get a job at the school paper, but they didnt need anyone. i tried volunteering a few places, including the campus radio, but it just didnt work with my schedule or there simply wasnt space. i did get an email today from some place i applied to volunteer, so that should work out. honestly id like to be more involved but it’s hard to at a school so large (part of the reason id like to transfer), and i dont have tons of time to spend trying to find extracurriculars since im taking 19 credits this semester and 3 upper-division courses.

i dont think i can get another rec from a professor because ive only had one class with a professor who actually graded my work and i already asked her for a rec. all my other classes have over 50 people in them and there’s very little interaction with the professor.

i know my chances are slim but i figured vandy would be my best bet since they seem to care more about stats than other schools and have about a 30% transfer acceptance rate.

@transfer0096 the chances are slim for everybody lol tbh I don’t really know how the vandy transfer applicant looks like, but looking at their freshman rates I would put them in the same categories of the ivies in terms of competitiveness (few would disagree on this). If that is the case, then you and I know that they want a well rounded applicant. But I’m really thrown off by their transfer rate which is insanely high for such a good school! And the number of accepted students is around 200 every year I think, so it is not a small sample… I really don’t know, I hope you’re right since academically we have very similar profiles!

@transfer0096 Not to be discouraging, but on Vanderbilt’s website they repeatedly mention how they seek to admit transfer students who will be an active part of the Vanderbilt community, and thus look for evidence of your involvement on campus at your current school.

One month from today we should be getting our first acceptances. Hang in there everyone!

Do we need to create a new portal id if we have applied last year?

@luckybaby I used my same one, and it worked. My entire checklist was complete since a lot of the material they kept over from last year.

@AGoodFloridian Thanks! But I doubt whether they have updated my new transcripts and new college report. Because I have just asked my school to send out these materials last Friday, and when I signed into the portal today, it was complete.

should i be worried that my transcripts, college report and sat have not been processed? i sent all of it during the last week of february roughly. tufts already has everything i sent.
