I was curious on everybody’s thoughts on this. My friend from Ohio has been accepted as a transfer to both schools. Being from Ohio, the location is not what is important to them. I know there are countless factors that can be analyzed, but let’s keep it simple. Vanderbilt University or Boston College?
Vanderbilt
Vandy.
Toss up.
Vandy
Visit each. Would you prefer to live in Nashville or Boston? Academically, these are peer schools, but they are in culturally different parts of the country.
I would not say these schools are peer schools. BC is very overrated, aside from their great business school. However, I would still pick Vanderbilt for business. I would definitely pick Vandy for anything else.
Vanderbilt clearly.
Thanks for the input guys! I really appreciate the insight. Do you think a degree from Vanderbilt would be helpful across the country or mostly in the south?
Depends on where. If you live in New England, BC is going to be FAR more helpful. If you live in the South, obviously Vanderbilt. Greater NY area or the mid-Atlantic, it’s probably a wash. Likewise anywhere further West.
Across country, with it being especially impactful in Atlanta and other cities in the region. I have grad school classmates from Vandy in prominent positions in NYC and Chicago, among other places. BC is a very good school but the only place I think it could have a potential advantage is the Boston area. Vandy is also an extremely well-run school with a beautiful campus and better weather. People are great too. Very enjoyable place to attend school.
I really don’t think, in this day and age, that a BC degree is going to be more highly valued than a Vandy degree anywhere, even New England, except perhaps in Boston itself. Employers are going to know about Vandy pretty much everywhere thanks to the golden age of the internet.
Agreed @Qwerty568.
Both a Vandy degree and a BC degree could help across the country, but more people would have heard of Vandy. BC may not be as well-known outside of New England and might even get confused with BU. It’s up to personal preference when it comes to your friend though.
Vandy will likely have the much better aid, if qualified to receive it.
Vandy has more national name recognition, much larger endowment and more prestige.
my D got into both BC and Vandy as well as many other great schools… she chose vandy
Under most circumstances, I would say Vanderbilt over BC. However, there are instances here a BC degree can serve you just as well, if not better.
