Hello,

I have vistied both schools and I am squarely on the fence about which one to apply ED.

It will be BBA at Emory vs. BA Economics at Vandy.

Somebody help put an end to this torture!

I personally will say that both are good but if you are into academics as well as good athletics, then Vanderbilt. I may apply there too so lets see. Good luck!

The athletics are better Vanderbilt, and the social scene probably too.

Academics at Emory are above and beyond Vanderbilt though. Especially Econ.

Vandy is quite anti-intellectual. Students can be shallow. (Just read the numerous threads about frats and sororities in the Vandy forum.) It also has been very overrated (especially recently); in the end, its low endowment will limit its potential.

Don’t know as much about Emory, but its students seem more serious, academically speaking. The quality of education is definitely higher there. Emory’s greater endowment also implies greater upside.

Good luck!

I would definitely apply ED to Emory. My friend lived in tennessee for a while and agrees that Vandy is a little overrated compared to other universities.

happymedstudent, in almost all cases, endowment means zilch.
The endowments of both Vandy and Emory will serve both schools relatively well and equally so.

You fail to realize that the administration at any given university is only free to spend about 10-20% of actual endowments on general stuff that they deem necessary. The other majority of the endowment is usually siphoned off for specific projects like maintaining the lawn, building buildings, etc.

wow happymedstudent, know what you are talking about.

It is Emory the one who is overrated. Let me see, which is more prestigious? which is more well known to the people in general? I am actually very surprised that Emory managed to rank same with Notre Dame and Vanderbilt in last year’s US news ranking.
yes, they have more endowment compare to Vanderbilt, but that doesnt really help when the school itself cannot advertise their school well to the people. Also, which one was harder to get in esp. last year? of course it is vanderbilt.

Also MPD14, how do you know that in GENERAL that academics in Emory is better and “above and beyond” than Vanderbilt? Do you have any statistics (maybe in econ yes)? If Emory has better acadmics than Vanderbilt, no wonder its ranking has dropped this year right?

Someone goes to Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt is more prestigious than Emory; dunoo about Academics and everything else.

wow no wonder thats all you can say because you dont know anything about both schools you dummy

I’m just stating what has been said many many times before. Does vanderbilt have a business school ranked in the top 10 in the US? No, but Emory does.

Vandy comes off as a preppy white school where everyone is concerned with being fake and joining a frat or sorority.

“wow no wonder thats all you can say because you dont know anything about both schools you dummy”

So touchy! Vandy students are not only shallow but also sensitive, apparently.

I wasn’t going to recommend one school over the other. But OP, if I were you, I’d definitely ED Emory. Imagine going to school with a bunch of insecure and arrogant losers.

Exactly medstudent, just like high school, all over again. Maybe even worse.

“happymedstudent, in almost all cases, endowment means zilch.”

Not really. Higher endowment is strongly correlated with higher prestige, selectivity, etc.

It’s no accident that HYPS are the most wealthy, powerful and prestigious universities in the world. Oxbridge cannot keep up with them mostly because the UK schools are poorer.

MPD14- i said maybe emory has better economics or buisness school/department than vanderbilt, well vanderbilt is not well known for economics apparently. yea yea i dont really approve their huge numbers of frat and stuff, but well not everybody is in a frat, just huge percent like 50 for female and 30 for male i think???

wow happymedstudent your ignorance surprises me everytime. Did I say he doesnt know anything about Vanderbilt only? i said “both schools” or should i say vanderbilt and emory?

also, how do you know that vanderbilt students are “anti-intellectual”? you have no proof or whatsoever to support your statements. Have you been there or even emory? no wonder. you said “Emory students SEEM blah blah blah” Why dont you rather defend your statement about criticizing Vanderbilt and why we are not better than Emory? Honestly, shutting your mouth up is better than talking about things that you dont know anything about.

medstudent you are just contradicting yourself.

“Not really. Higher endowment is strongly correlated with higher prestige, selectivity, etc.”

hmmmmm who has higher prestige and selectivity???

Oh and you know that besides HYPS, Notre Dame is #3 in endowments right?

"medstudent you are just contradicting yourself.

“Not really. Higher endowment is strongly correlated with higher prestige, selectivity, etc.”

hmmmmm who has higher prestige and selectivity???"

I said STRONGLY correlated, not PERFECTLY correlated! Besides, it’s debateable whether Vandy is more prestigious than Emory. (I don’t think either school is particularly prestigious, if you want to know the truth.)

After looking over your brilliant posts, I wonder if critical thinking and reading skills are necessary criteria for admission to Vandy.

“Oh and you know that besides HYPS, Notre Dame is #3 in endowments right?”

I can’t help it if the Domers care more about football than academics.

hmmm maybe you said “STRONGLY correlated”

but what did you say next?
“It’s no accident that HYPS are the most wealthy, powerful and prestigious universities in the world.”

hmmmm the most wealthy? you sure about that? as i said before Notre Dame is #3 in endowment. They are one of the richest school in the world. Why dont you read what you have written before whenever you try to refer something you have said.

Also, if higher endowment is STRONGLY correlated to higher selectivity and prestige, that is not a case in Emory.
