In terms of student body strength and prestige, how do these schools compare?

What do you want to major in?

Not an easy question. Depends upon whom you ask. But since you asked:
- Northwestern (even though I’m Catholic).
- Georgetown & Notre Dame
- Vanderbilt
- Emory

Based on prestige, I’d say northwestern=Vanderbilt>georgetown>Norte dame. I don’t know much about emory. I’m applying to those four regular decision and that’s probably how I would choose.

Are you from The South ? What was your impression of Dartmouth College after your visit ? Thanks !

I am from the south, undecided major, so i want to go to the school with the strongest/smartest students and also a prestigious name. Vanderbilt seems to have the most national merit scholars on the list but that’s not the end all be all for student body.I heard a lot of bad things about georgetown’s cas student body strength.

This is based off of my general idea of prestige, but it will differ depending on who you ask. All of these schools are pretty close in prestige, though. Their prestige definitely varies from region to region, and it also depends on what you are planning on majoring in.

Northwestern > Vanderbilt > Notre Dame > Georgetown > Emory

I wouldn’t choose between these schools based on prestige since the difference is so negligible and these are all great schools. Choose where you will be happiest based on location, programs offered, student body, social life, class sizes, weather, campus setting, etc.

If you are talking about the general public and their image as to prestige, Georgetown is by far the winner. No contest.

Georgetown would have a hard time even asserting itself as the most prestigious catholic school.

Rank-wise and selectivity-wise, these schools are all more or less in the same tier, with Northwestern being a little higher than the rest and Emory being marginally less well received.

Really? Like I already said, prestige definitely varies from region to region. Where I live, Northwestern is probably the most prestigious. Notre Dame is also well known. Many people are not familiar with Georgetown.

Northwestern

Notre Dame

Vanderbilt

Georgetown

Emory

If you’re talking public prestige, it really depends on where you live (especially with athletic/political leanings). In my region, for instance, it’s
- Vanderbilt
- Northwestern
- Emory
- Georgetown
- Notre Dame
If you’re looking at professional prestige, though, I don’t think there’s a distinguishable difference between the five for most majors (excluding majors on pre-med and pre-law tracks). Since you’re undecided I’d strongly advise against picking between the five based on prestige.

Georgetown!

Figures .

Alabama vs. Notre Dame for the BCS National Championship baby! :)

how are the student body at each? again vandy has a the most national merit finalists, but how do the intelligence and strength of each of these schools stack up?

diaosi

To be honest, you’ve listed five excellent schools.

Let’s look their ACT ranges (all data pulled from Common Data Sets)

Emory – 25%ile ACT = 30; 75%ile ACT = 33
Vanderbilt 25%ile ACT = 31; 75%ile ACT = 34
Northwestern 25%ile ACT = 31; 75%ile ACT = 34
Georgetown 25%ile ACT =29; 75%ile ACT = 33
Notre Dame 25%ile ACT = 32; 75%ile ACT =34.

Your NMS pool probably comes from those in the 75th and higher numbers.

The bottom line – as far as intellegence of student body, the differences in these 5 schools are not significant.

As far as strengths of each of these schools – all are top schools with excellent reputations –

Among these – your decision should probably be based on Cost, Strength of Program in what you want to study; regional issues (i.e., a school like Emory MAY have a stronger reputation in the South than in other regions – though it is excellent anywhere); and intangibles (i.e., which school feels most like home to you).

“Emory – 25%ile ACT = 30; 75%ile ACT = 33”

I wouldn’t trust those scores from Emory. How soon we forget:

If you want to argue that Emory is a step behind the others, feel free – my point is that all of these schools have excellent student bodies and overal reputations.
