Hey all!

I would really appreciate some opinions on this issue :) I'm a US citizen living overseas and I'll be applying for college admission in fall 2013. I can't decide between Vandy and NYU! Vandy has been my dream school for years, but they don't have a finance major unlike NYU, though I don't mind doing econs too since there's a finance-like minor too. Stern is a great business school from what I've heard and it has my intended major.

So right now I'm quite torn between which school I should apply ED to, since I can only apply to one place. I love Vandy and the whole culture and environment, that kind of thing, but all my friends and teachers tell me NYU has better opportunities. I'm not one of those people who aim to work on Wall Street, but I do want a good job, but Vandy seems to have pretty high job placement rates anyway.

Does anyone have any opinions on this? Thanks so much :D

If you’re not dead set on either (I.e. I’ve been dreaming of school X since I was five and they have everything that I want!) don’t apply ED to either.

The two schools are very different. I almost can’t imagine someone choosing between those two schools. Vanderbilt has a big athletic scene (SEC sports), which is very fun if you like that. NYU doesn’t have a defined campus. Vanderbilt’s campus is a gorgeous arboretum-like green space. Vanderbilt has students from all over, as does NYU, but there is still somewhat of a Southern vibe at Vanderbilt. Weather is better in Nashville. NYC has tons to offer, of course.

Thanks to both of you! I live in a city with lots of greenery and stuff around, so I’m pretty used to either environment, and honestly, I’ve wanted to go to Vandy for years like I mentioned in my previous post, the only thing they’re lacking in is a finance major. Personally I would pick Vandy but I’m concerned about the kind of opportunities that I could be getting at NYU. Is it true that NYU students are mostly kids who want to work at Wall Street? If that were to be the case, I think I’ll definitely apply for Vandy instead…

Stern kids want to work on Wall St, yes.

The rest of NYU is very a diverse place in terms of the future goals of students.

Apply to Vandy ED…and if you don’t get accepted can you then apply ED II to NYU?

BTW…NYU gives lousy aid, so are your parents prepared to pay all or nearly all costs? If not, don’t apply ED to NYU.

and, make sure your family will pay what Vandy would expect…run their NPC calculator.

Alright then thanks guys Looks like I’ll be applying to Vandy then Thanks for your help!

I go to Vandy right now-- great school academically, it’s beautiful, but you’re always reminded you’re in the South. You should take that into account when you’re applying early decision here. Vanderbilt has great name recognition in the south and mid-west (and it’s growing exponentially in prestige throughout the nation), but a program like NYU Stern is pretty hard to beat in terms of business reputation. If I were you, I would research a little more into your decision. One thing you might want to take into account is that Vanderbilt gives financial aid that meets your family needs through grants and not through loans (and NYU is known for being less than stellar with their financial aid program), which has been a huge blessing for my family.

Vanderbilt will give you an all-around college experience, and I think would be better undergrad - just study economics with the managerial studies minor.

I’m not a fan of NYU for undergrad (no cohesive campus feel), but for grad school I think its fine.
