Vanderbilt vs UVA (Engineering)

I’m really interested in space science/aerospace engineering and have narrowed my choices down to Vandy and uva after receiving generous aid from both (approximately same price for both). I eventually want to become an astronaut and travel to Mars, which is why I’m intrigued by UVA and the fact that they have a blossoming aerospace department and faculty which includes an ex-astronaut. The grounds at UVA were also breathtaking and I could not stop imagining myself walking across them every day. On the other hand, I loved the new engineering and science building/Wond’ry at Vanderbilt (I want to run my own space-related startup sometime in the future), and I loved Nashville as a whole. I have an obsession with music (mostly rap and indie rock) and can not see myself living somewhere without a good music scene, which is why I’m worried about living in a city as small as Charlottesville. A con of Vanderbilt for me is that they do not have a dedicated aerospace department/major but instead offer mechanical engineering. They do however have the Aerospace Design Lab which consistently competes and places in NASA competitions. The largest con of UVA is that when I visited it seemed like there was not that much to do other than stay on campus. Also, since it is a state school I am worried that down the line they may cut funding for out of state students which may lead me into a bad situation. I was also planning on minoring in economics. Please provide any insight, all help will be appreciated.

I think you answered your question! “UVA has a blossoming aerospace department”!! Both are good schools, but if Vandy doesn’t have a dedicated department that would be the deal breaker!!

Academically speaking, I agree with FoxRulz and choose UVa if aerospace engineering is what you’re interested in.

As for the more social aspect of your post, UVa is a very social school, so you will not lack for things to do on grounds. There are so many clubs and activities going on.

I know Nashville pretty well, and it’s a totally cool city with a great music scene. C’ville has a good music scene albeit smaller, but some big name performers often come to town or nearby (i.e. Richmond or DC).

As for funding for scholarships, UVa has done a great job with increasing its number of scholarships/grants.

The University is also about to embark on a huge fundraising campaign tied to its Bicentennial.

You will likely be going to graduate school either way, so keep that in mind.

If you are looking at Virginia schools you should definitely consider Virginia Tech! Their engineering program is known nationally. If you’re looking for somewhere to have a balance between fun and having a great education, I would highly recommend!
