I had two academic teachers write one, as required, but I'm also thinking about having my music teachers write one (either one combined letter or two separate ones)...would this be overkill/frowned upon?

I really hated the 'academic teacher' requirement and wound up having to get a teach that isn't necessarily 'literate' to write one in order to qualify. To compensate, I kind of tried to drown it out with amazing recs from my DECA advisor, economics teacher, and management teacher. So I wound up actually sending in 5 and it didn't kill me but I would not recommend doing what I did. My point is, 3 is no problem at all if there is a non-academic teacher that you think knows you really well.

I sent in my two rec's and then an outstanding one from my two art teachers (they wrote it together), I got in and I think it was a great supplement to my app. If your music teacher knows you well and has great things to say about you, go for it!

I did the same thing on my application and I actually think it is what got me in. I had my chemI&II/Physics teacher who had known me for two yrs write one and my calc teacher write one. (to fufill the req) but my calc teacher had known me for only a 6 weeks so I had my drama teacher write me an additional one. She had known me for two years and between her rec (she spent over a month on it and it couldn't have been more perfect) and my science teacher's one, I really think it made all the difference. I cannot see how one extra rec that will add a lot to your application would hurt, however I wouldn't send more than that. Best of luck!

i sent two from teachers (chem, english) then an additional one from supervisor i worked w. during an internship
