Why is it that a lot of threads say vandy is bad for premeds? What's up with their advising system? I can't find percentages for med school acceptance, not that they matter a whole lot since they're usually skewed, but I want to know if its better to go to vandy than UVA for premed.

I haven't seen any of these "bad for premed" threads you speak of. Could you please link one?

Vanderbilt has a 70% acceptance rate to medical school.

Sure...here's one

Hey! I'm in that thread. Damn, I've been on CC too long.

feenotype...do you have any take on vandy for premed (as opposed to uva)?

Regarding the concerns raised in that thread you linked to. First, there is a new pre-med advisor who is generally better regarded than Dr. Oeltmann. Second, it seems like the poster has an ax to grind. Third, the poster reveals a significant lack of knowledge about med school admissions. The poster rips Vandy for not encouraging pre-meds to take courses like anatomy and histology, whereas in fact most med schools discourage students from taking courses that will simply be repeated in med school. Med schools like to see students take other science courses that are not part of the med school curriculum. Third, I have had a different experience with Vandy biology and other science professors and found them to be very kind, helpful and accomodating.

I don't know much about UVA, but I really don't think you could characterize either UVA or Vandy as good or bad for premed. Each school is well-regarded and has many excellent opportunities for gifted students who take initiative. What prospective premeds need to know (and what I didn't know coming out of high school) is that the premed track is very difficult and excellent performance is very important. Vandy has a very talented student body and you will need to work very hard and make sacrifices to do well. If you are serious about going to medical school, you need to not only have innate ability but you need to be prepared to make the personal and social sacrifices necessary to make good grades from day one. It's very easy to end up with C's in crucial intro science courses if you are not committed.

Oh come on, man. That thread is more than 3 years old and reflects the stats from like 5 years ago. Much has changed since then, especially the statistics. If you are gonna claim a program is bad at least give us something from the past year or two...

hold up there pasch...i never said vandy was bad, i was just asking if it was bad...i really want to go there, just trying to evaluate whether or not its worth it to pay all that $$

I agree with mjc. All you need to worry about if you decide to go to Vanderbilt is your GPA, your ECs, and your recs--basically, the college admissions process all over again. The rest will take care of itself.

Hi!

My son was accepted by Vandy and UVA (Likely letter). He want premed program. As a Virginia resident, which school is better to him?

Virginia (it's cheaper!)
