Vandy, Chicago, Duke, Hopkins, UVA

What are my chances at Chicago, Duke, Vandy, Hopkins, UVA, William & Mary, and VA Tech?

Intersted in Physics, Math, and History

Grades-- 4.0 unweighted, appx 4.7 weighted (eight AP courses, many other advanced/honors courses, and 6 years of French)

SAT-- 710 (M), 690(CR), 730(W)

AP-- 5's BC Calculus, US History, European History, Psychology
4 English Language

Sr Yr AP--US Government, Physics C, French, plus Multi-Variable Calculus (non-AP, but honors)

Strong public high school in Northern Virginia

Rank appx--7/500

Book Award in History; School Awards in Math and English

Parents both attended Duke

Solid extracurriculurs and volunteer work (about 10 hours a week), but nothing amazing

UVA early action; no ED

Thanks for your help!!!

Good list of schools-might look at Davidson near Charlotte and Holy Cross near Boston. HC(don’t have to b e religious) has a good combination of academics and athletics on a smaller scale of Duke but HC is easier to get into.

You should have applied to Duke early if you wanted the legacy boost. It will be very hard now. You’re borderline for all the others so focus on producing an outstanding application.

Par72, funny you mentioned Davidson. It is the top choice of my brother, who is a junior, and wants the LAC experience. It is a bit too small for me though.

Waverly, thanks for the advice. I worked hard on the application and essays. Hope I am not borderline as an in-state student at UVA and W&M. I was thinking those were my safeties. You are right about trying Duke ED, but I was not sure I wanted to go there more than Chicago or Vandy (where I spent last summer at a camp there and loved it).

Instate of UVA and W&M, and great credentials.
Are you in?
Do you know how the class before your did as far as UVA and W&M admissions?
I’d like to say that you are in those two, but you would know VA admissions better than nonVA residents.

Marymac, My high school keeps statistics on how the seniors fared last year at colleges throughout the country (as well as these pretty cool scattergrams, that graph your chances). Last year, all of the students with similar credentials as mine made it into UVA, while most but not all were admitted to W&M. In light of the 11,500 EA applications (of which one is mine) at UVA though who knows if the statistics will hold up this year. Still, as an in-state student, I feel pretty good about my chances at both of these schools and was surprised when Waverly thought I was borderline at them. Any insight into Vandy, Duke, JHU, or Chicago would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree you should be in at UVA and W & M.

I don’t think Duke will happen, schools at that level only bend for legacies ED and your scores are low. VA Tech easy in, Vandy, JHU 40/60.

Waverly, You are probably right about Duke. I had my scores there without the application for awhile and a few days before the ED deadline, Duke sent an email encouraging me to apply ED and noting the much lower chances for RD. I just was not sure enough about Duke to do so. I do have an interview with a Duke alum coming up this Friday, and so all may not be lost. Any way, I feel better as I would be happy at UVA or W&M, although I am keeping my fingers crossed for Vandy.

The trick is to see if you can get an on campus interview, alum interviews don’t count for much. As of a couple of years ago, they still did them for some legacies and VIPs.
