Vandy ED and others?

I'm a rising senior from Wisconsin. White male from about 60k family income. Gpa is 3.89 unweighted. 4.02 weighted. Currently #2 in my class of 65, but I may fall to #3. (Valedictorian has a solid chance at HYP) I don't have AP classes other than Calculus and European History. I go to a small Lutheran school so those are all I can do. I have as rigorous a schedule as I can. It's not 100% the most difficult possible but that's due to scheduling conflicts. I scored a 35 on my ACT. I did only score a 6 on the writing, which concerns me. My essay I feel is solid and fairly unique, but nothing amazing. Id love to have more people read it if youre interested. Letters of rec are probably generic.

I've played varsity football since my sophomore year, and am a captain this year. I was on our FIRST robotics team last year, and will continue to do that. I'm in NHS and am president of my schools chapter. I've been involved in student council years and am the student body treasurer. I was selected to participate in Badger Boys State.(American Legion leadership program. Don't know how much weight this carries) I also work 20 hours a week during school if that matters.Full time in the summer.

What are my chances at Vanderbilt? I applied early decision. My other choices if not accepted are Washington, Rice, Northwestern, Carleton, and Grinnell. My safeties would be UW Madison and U of M Twin cities.

You have great chances all of them.

I’m applying ED1 as well and also have FIRST experience. Your ACT is definitely better than mine and
I think you have really strong ECs so I’d say you have a good shot. I’m not sure about how rank and everything stacks up because I come from a huge high school( super competitive class of 500).

My gpa is going to definitely be down this year, which worries me.

The only one which should be tough is Rice. Given your excellent class rank and ACT, and moderately extensice Ec resume, I’d guess that Vandy would seriously consider you if you applied ED. Also, I wouldn’t worry about the writing part, because they don’t really care about that kind of writing sample. What they care about is the CA essay and supplements.

Yeah, I took my time for my Common App essay. I feel its well written and a great representation of me. Is Rice really that much more selective than Vanderbilt?

You have a strong chance!

Hey, I’m also applying to Vanderbilt ED, and I have comparable stats. (But like anybody’s, you should take my opinion with a grain of salt). I’m 3/400 and have a 33. Vanderbilt loves accepting high-stat applicants, and your ACT is definitely on the high side for those admitted to Vanderbilt. Your extracurricular are great and you have a great GPA in spite of working 20 hours a week.

Your writing score, however, tells a story. You’re probably not an eloquent writer and have trouble expression ideas in very specific terms. Vanderbilt probably won’t look at the ACT writing score, but your essays will be incredibly important. If writing is not your strong suit. then I would get multiple opinions on your essays and check out a book like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Writing-College-Application-Essay-Anniversary/dp/0062123998/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1411088348&sr=1-3&keywords=college+application+essay</a>. I’d be glad to read your essay if you want (sorry to assume you’re not a good writer, but I’m just going on what you said in your post!)

Additionally, your lack of APs could be a problem. Go to the college board’s website and sign up for some SAT subject tests. I recommend Math level II and another test of your choice. This will make up for it. You can take two and have your scores in time for your app on the October 12th date (you can take two in one sitting, but will have to pay the late fee). As long as you’re in calc this year, math level II should require little to no studying (just bring a good calculator). The World History exam should be fairly easy if you’ve passed AP Euro (though you might need to do about 10 hours of reading to prepare). And hey, if you get bad scores, Vanderbilt doesn’t require you to submit any of them, so you might as well sign up.

Also, don’t let yourself fall to rank 3! Vanderbilt requires first period grades to be submitted and they will also look at your semester report if you’re wait-listed. Good grades could be what get you in.

If you just sit for a few SAT IIs and make sure your essays are wonderful, I’m pretty confident that you’ll be admitted ED and I might see you there. Also, if you want an opinion on your essay you can PM me or email me (nickc85@live.com).

P.S., for your own well-being, I wouldn’t stress as much as you do. To be honest, if you do what I said to do, you’d probably be one of the top applicants considering that your stats are above average for those accepted ED least year (avg. ACT is a 33 and HS rank percentile 95.5th)

solid candidate for all. act writing is not that important, don’t worry

Hey there, I’m in essentially the same boat as you here, with similar stats. I know exactly what you mean by having few AP classes and schedule conflicts. I only have three AP’s, one of which I’m in now since that’s all my school has offered over my four years, and I didn’t take every single college level class my school offers simply due to not being able to fit it into my schedule. I don’t know how much this helps you, but I just thought knowing there’s somebody out there worrying about the same thing might ease your stress (:

Thanks, that does help. Its crazy to see how much some people on here have accomplished already.

Seriously! And as far as EC’s go, my school doesn’t even have that many outside of sports. And most of them don’t do a whole lot outside of school. I have three main ones that actually do things: FBLA, Math Is Cool team, and Leo Club, which just got started last year and is community service based. I haven’t had any crazy opportunities for internships either  These are times when I wish I went to a big school haha

No guarantees, but for ED at Vanderbilt you have a great shot! As for APs, I know a lot of colleges look at what you do it the context of your school. Don’t stress too much over the next month; there’s nothing you can do now.
