How well accredited is engineering at vandy? I am going to choose between UMich and Vandy and I would like some input. Please feel free to share. Please any information would be of great help, including reserach opportunities, grad school chances after graduation, etc.

Well, in terms of being "accredited", all of the engineering majors except computer science (which is not really engineering) are ABET accredited.

Which field are you interested in? Some fields have more research money than others, more research opportunities. In general, Michigan is larger and has more research variety than Vanderbilt (and almost all other schools as well).

I think this decision depends partly on what you want out of your undergraduate years. My son took Vanderbilt over Michigan without hesitation because he wasn't interested in the huge school environment, and because he has a variety of interests outside of engineering and thought it would be better to be at a school with a lot of good humanities/social sciences, etc. Other students will have different priorities.

FWIW, my son has been doing research since first semester freshman year. (He is a computer science major.) I asked the dean about the research opps once when son was visiting and was told all students can do research by junior year, many by sophomore year and those who enter with advanced standing can find projects freshman year. The faculty is quite accessible.

Check the web sites. Look up what the various professors are up to, who has grants doing the kind of projects you care about.

I highly recommend visiting on accepted student days for the engineering school. There should be a lot of professors available for you to talk with. My son got a lot of information and no hard sell.
