@yellowgra I bid on priceline and got it. was a bit surprised and pleased. used it for all our college visits too.

@Socalda - I believe it was through FB that my s and this other student connected, the young man friended my s on FB, then saw how much they had in common, you know important things like a love of rap music.
and they agreed to be roommates.

@JRMAMA - I’m also a single parent, so I do understand. Let’s be sure to meet up!

4beardolls - Come on down! So happy you will be joining us!

What a wonderful group to join! Looks like everyone is so much further into the process - already booked flights and reserved hotel rooms. Since we only paid Vandy deposit yesterday, we haven’t even discussed any thing beyond that. In fact, we haven’t even received any confirmation which makes me a little nervous.
DS will be in Arts and Science with premed focus. We visited the campus twice - once during DS’ sophomore year and once after he was admitted.
I look forward to sharing experiences and thoughts with you all.

@4beardolls, don’t feel bad … we just paid the deposit today! However, I did make some leeway on Family Weekend travel … booked the plane tickets, and now I’m working on bidding on Priceline for a rental car (denied today … will try again tomorrow!), and checking out suite style hotels around the airport. Everything around Vandy is so expensive. I see a lot of people have a jump on this as many of the hotels close to the campus are already booked. Hope to have this all completed by next week at the latest. Most people are spending the night before or after move-in day? I guess it depends the times that one gets to move in. Will have to wait and see about this. I will be driving about 11 hours or so from the Tampa area and only want to stay one night as my younger HS D has her first day of classes on the Monday after. Could be tight! Looking forward to meeting everyone on this forum at the Vandy campus soon!!!

Anyone planning their kids’ high school graduation party? I found some awesome “anchors” at a party supply store. They are silver (wish they were black or gold) but it will go with my Anchor Down theme. Went to Dollar Tree and bought some other decorations, napkins and 4-to a pack plastic white plates (I can’t bear to use paper). I’m going to do a Southern BBQ theme–pulled pork sliders, macaroni and cheese bites, baked beans, fruit salad and found a very cute anchor cookie cutter for dessert. Our graduation ends at 2 pm so it’s kind of a post-lunch/pre-dinner. I am going to have to borrow some crock pots to keep it all warm!

No confirmation here, either. I thought they might at least send a “Welcome Aboard” email.

But the two choices on the portal webpage (Yes/No) have disappeared, and on the Application Summary page there is confirmation that the deposit was received.

Rent vs Buying Fridge and Microwave for the dorms:
Buy: From VU Bookstore - Fridge ($179.98) + MW ( $100.54) = $306.46 ( includes tax) ; UPS Storage for 3 Summers = $255. Total cost: $561.46
Rent : From collegerefrigerators dot com ; $218.40/year * 4 years = $873.6 - split with room mate; total Cost : $436.8

Rent is better ? Do I have it right ?

I was a little worried when I didn’t get any confirmation (or fireworks) after deposit but did get email two days later. Waiting patiently for the Road to Vanderbilt Booklet. I know it’s online but there’s nothing like holding it your hands.

Anybody having trouble logging into MYAPPVU ? site seems to be down

@lovingasiandad, I was just able to log in. Maybe it’s back up now. If not, a different browser might work

I have tried 2 different browsers and I get “An Error Has Occurred While Processing Your Request”. Very nervous about this. I do see a $400 credit card charge by Vandy.

Renting is OK for freshman year for faraway families. For car commuters to Vandy…consider buying.
Lots of sales on these mini-frig’s take place in July at Home Depot and BB&B. The price at Vandy bookstore looks reasonable. One lasted 8 years in our family which made it a good purchase. Ours was used two years at Duke then --Dukie went abroad followed by moving into an off campus apartment with kitchen. Then it got driven to Nashville (mini frig’s travel very well in cars). The Commons dining is so fab with its own coffee shop that Vandy son didn’t even want anything to heat water with in his room. (No 1970s hot pot for him). Vandy son preferred to have no printer as well. Altho we wanted him to take a mini printer.
The logic re split with roommate over four years won’t really hold up due to the permutations of each student’s pathway at Vanderbilt. Your new sophomore roommate and you might have to sell one of your frig’s or microwaves to a new student if you have duplicates–easily done. One summer my son went to 6wk summer school and needed frig and mini microwave in room --with reduced summer offerings in the dining facilities. Another summer he rented a large home in Hillsboro Village and had a full kitchen. One semester he went abroad. Another year, he was in a Mayfield Lodge which has a full kitchen. He basically gave his frig to friends in single or double rooms half the time he was at Vandy. And lastly it was given a salute and handed to an underclassmen.

I think I’ve read that some schools have used ones available on campus. Do you know if Vandy has anything like that?

@SoCalDad2, does your screen look like this?

Common App ID: xxxxxx
Application Status: Member of Class of 2018
Counselor: xxxxxxx
Mat Deposit Paid: 04/30/2014

I also noticed that the yes/no button is gone.

@lovingasiandad, we were able to log in just now.

Thanks, @SoCalDad2. DS is in then; I will sleep well tonight.

Just a reminder to anyone with a 2014NMF - don’t forget to designate Vanderbilt as the first choice college by today.

@Faline2, thanks for coming here to share your college/Vandy wisdom.

lovingasiandad;

More food for thought (pun intended) on the microwave and fridge issue:

1) Typically one roommate buys/rents frig and microwave; other buys TV and/or rug for room if TV is a “yes” decision (a lot of students today do not use TVs but rely upon Netflix and Hulu)
2) Roommates only live together a second year about 30% of the time, so take that into consideration
3) We used dorm room movers.com for our storage, cost $35 to store the frig this summer in Nashville, they deliver it to your dorm room in the fall.

The roommate may also have already purchased a frig and microwave, and then you might be responsible for buying something else for the room. I am not sure its as straightforward as your original financial calculations.

I just saw this on the Vandy site and had to share. Take a few minutes to watch the video. It is so worth it! <a href=“VUCast: Students changing lives | Vanderbilt University”>VUCast: Students changing lives | Vanderbilt University;

oh, that was great. impressive, wonderful Vandy film and HOD majors!
