[ b]Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:**

Hopefully this will help somebody, and hopefully it’s formatted correctly!

Decision: REJECTED
Major: Undecided College of Arts and Sciences
Decision Plan: Regular
Objective:

  • SAT I: Did not take.
  • ACT: 36 (36, 36, 34, 36)
  • SAT II: None.
  • Weighted GPA (out of ??): 4.58 / 5.0
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.98 / 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): We don't publish rank, but I am 65 out of 720.
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): Junior year was United States History (5), English Language (5) and Music Theory (5). Senior year will be Environmental Science, Psychology and Calculus AB.
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): None.
  • Senior Year Course Load: Honors English, AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP Calculus AB, Sociology Regular, Consitutional Law Regular, Honors Orchestral Winds, Honors Wind Ensemble.
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None.

Subjective:

  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Top musician in state on my instrument, invited to state music education conference for two years in a row, honors ensembles both times. Played at regionals for three years, upward trend. I help out some of my teachers during my free period. (I teach underclassmen, and I think I mentioned in my application that I want to go into education.) Marching band (section leader) for four years, top concert band and orchestra for three years. Pit orchestra for three years. Two-time Camp NaNoWriMo winner. Wrote a novel in a month.
  • Honors: National Honors Society, state commended, Top Scholar at school, AP Scholar, etc. Outstanding achievement in Spanish and physics junior year.
  • Job/Work Experience: None.
  • Volunteer/Community service: Only through National Honors Society.
  • Summer Activities: None.
  • Essays: Common App essay was about regional and state music as mentioned above, about learning from mistakes/failure. It sounds a lot like a cliché "sports injury" story, except about dropping my instrument. (8/10) Supplement was about my commitment to band. Perhaps rehashing what was already in activities section, but it explained why I decided to help out in the music department. Quite passionate, if I'm honest. (8/10)
  • Teacher Recommendations: One letter of recommendation from United States History teacher. Could have been okay, or good, as she's a strong writer but didn't know me that well. (7/10) Other letter from my Spanish teacher who adored me! (9/10) An additional letter from band director. Counselor says it's one of the best letters she's read in a long time. (10/10)
  • Counselor Rec: Counselor was vouching for me. She's also very articulate in her writing. (8/10)

Other:

  • State (if domestic applicant): IL
  • School Type: Public, Suburban, Large
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Female
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

Why you think you were not accepted and general comments: I was already rejected from Blair School of Music. Arts and Sciences was my second choice. Thus, my application was geared towards a music admittance and not an undecided major. Vandy also took one girl from my school ED (fun fact, she applied to Peabody School of Education and now has second thoughts, ugh).

Good luck out there!

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Harvard Secondary School Program (2017), Volunteer at my Monastery, Professional Business Group in town, Her Campus HSA Ambassador, Started my own non-profit organization Raised $13K+ The Greek Syrian Refugee Crisis (Co-Founder), Competitive hellenic dancing Since 8 years old, Thespian Troupe 6180, part of theatre program at my school (Assistant Sound Engineer), NHS, Female Impact (Feminist Club, Secretary),
Job/Work Experience: Work weekly at my family business since 2008
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer weekly at my local Monastery 5+ Hours, GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America)
Summer Activities: Work with Refugees in Greece, Harvard Secondary School Program; Took Macroeconomics and Journalism (Given 4 Harvard Credits each)

Essay (rating 1-10, details): 10, I had written about how I was challenged at Harvard and received a D- in Macroeconomics. I believed I was unstoppably and I used my non-profit as well as my mature lifestyle as an example of how I had thought I was unable to possibly fail and therefore learned my limits. A past Columbia University Admissions officer read my essay and said it was strong.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9, Science Teacher, she saw my highs and lows because it was in a science class and I am not gifted in that subject, she had seen me struggle to get a good grade as well as seen me help others. We are also very close and are part of the same friend group. But, she is a newly graduated teacher who had no idea how to work the Common App.
Teacher Rec #2: 7, History Teacher, he has a good opinion about me due to my outspoken thoughts and interests as well as my ability to debate. He isn’t really the person to go in depth about a person.
Additional Rec: 1) 10, She is a nun at the monastery I volunteer at, she knows my family and I extremely well and wanted Barnard for me the most. 2) 9, written by close family friend, known me since I was little, spoke about my desire for a higher education since I was young.
Counselor Rec: (?) My class size was 650-700 kids, she told me to write info on a paper and then she’d write it based off of that.

Comments: I work daily at my family business, it has taken up a lot of my time.

Reasons to not get in: My standardized test scores are an obvious reason, my grades aren’t the strongest either. I had just hoped that possibly they could look over the scores in a holistic way, they did not.

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: I think a good part of why I was accepted was my essays. Also, I showed passion for creation and engineering somehow through my application. I should mention I applied through Questbridge, but didn’t match, so I rolled over to RD with Questbridge, probably why I got 70k in grants and financial aid.

can you send your essays so I can get an ideaaa?
