Hi!I am having a hard time deciding between vandy and colgate right now.any ideas about them in terms of academics, social life, preparation for grad school, job placements and campus atmosphere?
I am thinking of majoring in econ,so which one would you say is better in econ?
also,i heard vandy has a huge greek life and very southern culture.i am kind of worried about it.can anyone comment on it?
Thanks for help!!!!

I'm working through the same thing (except I got waitlisted at Vandy). Colgate is isolated, but has a greek life just like Vandy does except it's not as southern extreme. Vandy has a reputation for being a good "southern" school (I strongly disagree with this). It all comes down to where you want to be, possibly for the rest of your life. Do you want to get job offers from places in Atlanta and Tennessee or work in NY?

Come on. Can't compare the two. Colgate is a fine school but it's Vanderbilt all the way. More academic, weather better, exclusive (employers in NY will love Vandy grads) Sports better (SEC, DI) Vandy is also a little cheaper, all in, if you can believe that. All in all I guess it comes down to whether or not you would rather go to the best school in the South or an also ran in the Northeast.

New York is one of the most heavily represented states at Vanderbilt and many of these graduates return to work in NYC. Your statement is equivalent of saying Duke grads all work in Durham, or Northwestern grads work in Evanston. Employers in New York know Vanderbilt is a great school and it has better name recognition than Colgate (most people make dentistry jokes when they hear the name of this small, isolated LAC).

My S visited and considered both before deciding to attend Vanderbilt. We all loved Colgate, which really seemed to offer a wonderful academic program, an involved faculty, and an enthusiastic student body, but my S ultimately felt it was too small and too isolated for him. At Vanderbilt, he felt he could be happy as a freshman and as a senior, as the University and surrounding Nashville offer more options. He couldn't be happier with his decision to attend Vanderbilt but I think Colgate is a great school for a student seeking that atmosphere.
