Vandy vs. Davidson

Hey guys, I was accepted to a number of places, and ended up narrowing it down to Vanderbilt and Davidson
I visited Vanderbilt over the summer and loved it
I just visited Davidson a week ago, and also loved it
I'm choosing them both over technically more "prestigious" schools
I plan on going premed, with a possible neuroscience major

I have heard a number of things from a few well respected teachers, friends and counselors, and both schools definitely have their pros and cons

My questions for you guys are: What are your biggest gripes about Vandy? How's premed? What are the best things about Vandy? Relate to Davidson if at all possible.

Thanks!

Two fabulous choices - congratulations! I love the Davidson campus and the small, intimate feel, but that’s just a personal preference. If I was 18 again, I’d probably feel stronger about the Nashville night scene. I don’t think you’ll find any real grounds for a decision on the basis of pre-med - they should both be outstanding.

Well I am not familiar with Davidson, but Vandy has outstanding opportunities for pre-meds. We have a hospital right next door to campus, so there are plenty of opportunities for research and shadowing (which are basically required of applicants). Also, we have a ton of community service organizations to get involved in. The pre-med core classes here are pretty tough though, and most would consider them “weed-out” classes. Our pre-med adviser is ok, but his secretary is fantastic and will be happy to help you every step of the way as you apply to med school. As a senior this year, I’ve been able to see first hand how a Vandy education allows students to get into top med and grad schools.

Ooooh … if you like both, it’s a tough choice! I happen to love Davidson … would have gone there when I was young, had I had the opportunity (didn’t know it existed back then). My D wasn’t so keen on Davidson, though. She thought the town was b-o-r-i-n-g, and she thought the student body was too small.

It depends on what YOU want in a school. If you truly like both, you can’t go wrong either way (sorry to be of so little help!).
